A due anni di distanza dall’inatteso exploit del precedente Final Straw (oltre due milioni di copie vendute ed un prestigioso Mercury Prize per il migliore album), la pressione accumulatasi intorno al quintetto capitanato da Gary Lightbody sembra avere giocato agli Snow Patrol un brutto scherzo. Le undici canzoni di Eyes Open, a partire dal primo singolo estratto You’re All I Have (brano dall’incedere teso ma estremamente melodico), convincono infatti soltanto in parte. La seconda traccia Hands Open, grazie ad una sezione ritmica in evidenza fin dalle prime battute ed un riff di chitarra semplice eppure incisivo, avrebbe forse meritato di aprire l’album al posto della già citata You’re All I Have. La successiva Chasing Cars, nonostante emani il dimesso romanticismo che tanto piace al pubblico anglosassone, non è la ballata più convincente dell’album. Set The Fire To The Third Bar, soprattutto per la presenza di una voce femminile (Martha Wainright), spezza il leggero ma palpabile senso di monotonia che si avverte negli episodi più introspettivi di Eyes Open.
I brani più veloci e tirati come Headlights On Dark Roads e It’s Beginning To Get To Me, pur ricordando vecchi singoli degli Snow Patrol (Spitting Games, per citarne uno), restano alla fine dei conti le cose migliori di questo lavoro. La penultima canzone Open Your Eyes, col suo coinvolgente crescendo finale, suona quasi come un tributo (involontario?) agli U2 di The Joshua Tree. A quanto pare avere aperto i concerti europei della band di Bono ha segnato il songwriting di Lightbody. Il finale viene affidato ad un brano – The Finish Line – che sa tanto di ninna nanna.
Che altro dire? Il compitino è stato svolto in maniera diligente e precisa, ma le speranze di bissare il successo di due anni fa sono ragionevolmente remote.

Le canzoni di questo album sono orecchiabili sin dall'inizio ma se ascoltate e riascoltate ti rimangono dentro, dandoti qualche bella sensazione.
"Hands Open", la vera gemma dell'album, una CANZONE nel vero senso della parola, che trasmette qualcosa di intimo con le parole.
