L'album "Kimono My House" è l'esempio lampante di come, molto spesso, alcuni artisti, nella loro carriera, siano in grado di produrre tanti lavori discreti, ma un solo grande capolavoro. Gli Sparks, nel 1974, ebbero questo sprazzo di genio e produssero questo disco che, nonostante il progressivo oblìo, era (e resta) una pietra miliare nel suo genere, che ora si chiama glam-rock.
Innanzitutto diciamo che quando si dice Sparks si parla principalmente dei fratelli Ron e Russel Mael, californiani trapiantati a Londra, rispettivamente tastierista (e autore principe) e cantante del gruppo. I due, per loro fortuna, erano affiancati da tre ottimi esecutori, sui quali spiccava il chitarrista Adrian Fisher. I fratelli erano, oltre che ottimi musicisti, anche due istrioni da palcoscenico. Basta dare un'occhiata alla copertina del disco per intravederne le caratteristiche fra le quali emerge l'inquietante somiglianza di Ron con Adolf Hitler. Una somiglianza non casuale, in quanto è proprio all'epoca del decadente cabaret tedesco che la musica degli Sparks fa riferimento. Col pluripremiato film-musical Cabaret, prodotto solo qualche anno prima, iniziò un filone artistico che intendeva rivalutare la cultura, tutto sommato alternativa e sommersa, presente nei fumosi locali di Berlino e Monaco durante la scalata al potere del nazismo. Anche la musica non sfuggì alla moda, e "Kimono My House" ne è l'esempio più illuminante perchè seppe fondere canoni rock, anche duri, alle atmosfere torbide e decadenti tipiche degli spettacoli cabarettistici tedeschi.
L'album inizia con tre pezzi che, ai tempi, lasciarono senza fiato anche gli ascoltatori più esigenti e che sono le tre perle della produzione: "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us", energico e un po' hard duello western, che cela la metafora dell'ariano con l'ebreo, "Amateur Hours", suadente rock'n'roll, e la grande "Falling in Love With Myself Again", il cui ritmo è preso pari-pari dalle cantate da birreria tipiche della Baviera. Su tutti emerge la voce in falsetto di Russel Mael, che non nascondeva la sua ammirazione per Marlene Dietrich ed il suo Angelo Azzurro a cui faceva il verso, e la chitarra di Adrian Fisher, pulita e leggera. In piena normalità la sezione ritmica e le tastiere di Ron Mael, il cui grande merito fu quello di comporre tutti i tracks dell'allora LP. Altri pezzi notevoli sono "Talent Is an Asset", quasi una danza a ritmo di xilofono, "Hasta Manana Monsieur", altro pezzo di puro cabaret e "Thank God It's Not Christmas", ironico rock cadenzato dal testo, allora, anti-conformista. Meno riusciti gli altri ed i due bonus-tracks, ormai immancabili su tutti i cd ripubblicati.
In definitiva un riuscito mix di atmosfere, di rock semplice e deciso dai colori marcati e dallo sfondo decisamente mitteleuropeo, che ne hanno fatto un capolavoro assoluto e, purtroppo, unico del panorama glam-rock. A questo disco si sono ispirati molti musicisti in seguito divenuti più famosi (come, per esempio, i Queen, che io sento in ogni nota, anche se molti di voi diranno di no).
