Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh e Sporty sono tornate. Contenti? Su, su ora non vi ribaltate dalla sedia per l'entusiasmo! Dopo dieci anni eccole in una 'reunion', per celebrare i successi delle cinque (ex) ragazzine inglesi.
Quando nel 1994 uscì 'Wannabe', loro primo singolo, fu subito 'Spice mania'. Erano fresche, giovani, ribelli e soprattutto normali. Si, perché a mio avviso il punto di forza delle Spice Girls è proprio questo. Nessuna di loro brilla per bellezza né tantomeno per talento. Sono tutte e cinque delle ragazze carine, ma che si possono tranquillamente incontrare girando per una cittadina della provincia inglese. Nessuna di loro ha una gran voce: canticchiano tutte e cinque, ma nessuna con risultati eccelsi. La sopravvalutata Melanie C non ha niente in più di Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell niente più di Emma Bunton o Melanie B. Mediocri. Tutte e cinque. Però, nel 1994, ce la fecero. Raggiunsero un enorme successo di vendite e fecero impazzire le ragazzine di tutto il mondo coi loro motivetti orecchiabili, i loro abiti semplici che sembravano comprati dai cinesi (prima, almeno, che iniziassero a vestire abiti costosissimi), trucco e parrucco erano abbastanza caserecci (e volgarotti). Ecco perché le adolescenti di tredici anni fa si riconoscevano in loro. «Se ce l'ha fatta una tracagnotta bassottina come Geri Halliwell perché non ce la posso fare io?». Sta comunque di fatto che, talentuose o no, dotate o meno, le cinque ragazze speziate dominarono il mondo delle vendite nella seconda metà degli anni Novanta infrangendo record di vendite. Dopo 'Wannabe' fu la volta di 'Say You'll Be There'. Entrambi i video erano energici e di 'taglio femministeggiante'. Seguirono due ballate: 'Two Become One' e 'Mama', e poi quella che secondo me è la 'meno peggio' del primo album delle girls: 'Who Do You Think You Are', che poi fu anche l'ultimo singolo estratto dell'album.
Ricordo i centri commerciali invasi di gadget con stampate le facce delle Spice Girls, ricordo che ogni stazione radio, ogni televisione trasmetteva a ripetizione i loro pezzi, le trasmissioni tv se le contendevano come ospiti, ogni TG parlava di loro. Era un'ossessione. E l'ossessione continuò con l'uscita del secondo album, 'Spiceworld'. 'Move Over' fece da colonna sonora allo spot per la Pepsi, e poi vi fu 'Spice Up Your Life', motivetto simpatico. Seguì l'uscita di una pellicola (scusate, non ho osato definirlo 'film') onomima dell'album e un World Tour. Come un fulmine a ciel sereno, a tour iniziato, un annuncio fece tremare il mondo e cadere in disperazione le adolescenti di mezzo mondo. Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, forse la più rappresentativa del gruppo, lasciava le Spice Girls. Motivi? Ignoti. Alcuni sostennero che la decisione fu presa per 'inconciliabili divergenze con le altre ragazze', altri imputarono la causa della dipartita della rossa ad un tumore al seno. Personalmente spero (per la Halliwell) che il motivo fosse il primo. Ma dato che è ancora viva e vegeta, poco importa. Sta di fatto che 'il sogno Spice' finì. Di colpo. E malamente. Fu forse un bene per l'immagine del gruppo nel mondo, perché il giocattolo si ruppe proprio quand'era all'apice del successo creando una sorta di mito.
Dopo aver tentato la carta 'new entry' invitando nella band l'ex-transessuale israeliana Dana International, trionfatrice quell'anno all'Eurofestival e diva in Israele e molto famosa in UK e nel resto d'Europa, che però commentò con un secco e saggio 'no comment', (mi chiedo quale nickname le avrebbero assegnato: dopo Ginger Spice facciamo Trans Spice?!), le quattro superstiti pubblicarono un terzo album che però fu un flop: ci furono solo due singoli estratti, di cui solo uno, 'Holler', a mio parere degno di nota. Intanto Geri Halliwell, dimagrita e ripulita, impazzava nel mondo col suo primo lavoro da solista, seguita a ruota da Melanie C, poi Melanie B, poi Emma Bunton e poi Victoria Beckham. Ognuna di loro tentò la carriera da solista, chi con un discreto successo (Geri H, Melanie C, Emma B), chi con flop clamorosi (Melanie B, Victoria B) riciclandosi poi in altri ambiti (cinema, teatro e soprattutto gossip). A dieci anni di distanza tutto questo sembrava ormai un lontano ricordo: 'carina l'ultima di Melanie C!' 'Sapevi che ha iniziato con le Spice Girls?' 'Spice chi?' 'Ma dai!'.
E invece le Ragazze Speziate ci riprovano. Tra smentite, soffiate, liti, condizioni, promesse, rieccole sulla scena con un greatest hits contenente 13 successi del passato (praticamente tutti i singoli) e due nuove incisioni. Formazione nuovamente al completo, le ormai donne fatte (quattro su cinque sono madri: l?unica che non ha figliato è Melanie C, che sprizza saffismo da ogni poro) si ripresentano ripulite, cresciute, vestite e pettinate di classe. In teoria, lontane anni luce dalle ragazzine che erano. In teoria. I due nuovi pezzi sono (ma tu guarda!) una ballata dal titolo che suona ipocrita all'ennesima potenza: 'Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)' (dopo che si sono scannate anche solo all'idea di doversi riunire come si può intitolare il singolo del rientro così?!) e un motivetto danzereccio dal titolo 'Voodoo'. Lo stile è sempre lo stesso. Niente di nuovo sotto il sole. Motivetti orecchiabili, voci mediocri (per esser gentile con delle madri di famiglia), risultato commerciale buono per le vendite, ma solo per quelle. Quel che mi fa sorridere è che sono uscite una caterva di versioni diverse del GH: quella col solo cd, quella col cd e il dvd, quella con cd remix, quella con cd karaoke. Ed è stato lanciato un nuovo tour mondiale - che purtroppo/per fortuna non toccherà l'Italia ? per aggiudicarsi i biglietti del quale è stato indetto un concorso: solo i fortunati vincitori potranno assistere allo spettacolo. Mi chiedo? Dopo i flop di vendite degli album di Melanie B e Victoria Beckham e del terzo album di Geri Halliwell, le signore sono così sicure che la gente farà a botte per andarle a sentire? Forse qualcuno dovrebbe dir loro che i tempi di 'Wannabe' sono passati...
Metto due stellette a questo disco. Una perché, sebbene molto mediocri, le Spice Girls mi stanno simpatiche, e l'altra per il coraggio della reunion. Curiosità: dopo che Geri Halliwell è uscita dall'incubo della bulimia (cosa che me la rende ancor più simpatica: ho passato quella malattia e so cosa significa), si prospetta per la Beckham lo spettro dell'anoressia. Troppo magra, gli organizzatori del tour le hanno imposto una dieta ricostituente per evitarle un collasso nel bel mezzo di un'esibizione. Non so, mi stanno simpatiche. E mi fanno un pò pena, perché (e con questo mi attirerò critiche e prese per i fondelli da tutti) son piene di problemi fin sopra i capelli. Non economici, ma i soldi non son tutto. Con la bulimia e l'anoressia non si scherza. Che ci si chiami Pinca Pallina o Victoria Beckham. Il Greatest Hits si conclude con 'Goodbye': le ragazze hanno infatti dichiarato che con questo tour le Spice Girls come formazione darà definitivamente l'addio al pubblico.
PS Scommettiamo che, se avranno successo, uscirà un nuovo loro album a formazione completa? 'Money changes everything', cantava Cyndi Lauper.
