STEVE HACKETT - GENESIS REVISITED II - LIVE AT HAMMERSMITH - Maggio 2013 - DVD ottobre 2015
In generale
Si tratta della ripresa di uno dei concerti del tour "Genesis Revisited II" che Steve sta portando ancora oggi in giro per il mondo.
Il luogo, il teatro Hammersmith di Londra, lo ha già visto trionfare in altre sue passate esibizioni.
La scaletta è di quelle da togliere il fiato a qualuque amante dei Genesis dell'epoca d'oro. Brani come "Supper's Ready", "Firth of Fifth" e "The Musical Box" valgono da soli la spesa. Ma poi se ne aggiungono tanti altri che rendono questo live veramente eccezionale, con pochissimi momenti meno che fantastici. Steve ha rispettato pienamente le versioni originali, apportando poche modifiche e sempre ben congegnate. Strepitosa la parte centrale improvvisata di "I Know What I Like".
Sul palco ci sono i musicisti che accompagnano Steve nel tour e poi si alternano alcuni graditi ospiti.
Il gruppo di Steve, ormai affiatatissimo, è composto da:
- Roger King: tastiere - Ottimo tastierista, arriva da un'esperienza come session man. Buon tocco e buona sensibilità musicale.
- Gary O'Toole: batteria e voce - mancino come Phil, ha un lungo curriculum come session man ed è cresciuto molto negli ultimi due anni, sia come tecnica (già molto buona), sia come fantasia e musicalità. Possiede anche buone capacità vocali e un timbro interessante
- Lee Pomeroy: basso e chitarra 12 corde (davvero bravo)
- Rob Townsend: sax, flauto, percussioni, tastiere. Ottimo al sax e al flauto
- Nad Sylvan: voce solista (un mix tra Gabriel e Collins senza voler imitare nè l'uno nè l'altro, molto equilibrato e personale, davvero notevole)

Audio
Qualità molto buona, curata l'immagine spaziale degli strumenti e la correttezza della timbrica. Soprattutto si nota un'ottima chitarra 12 corde e acustica 6 corde. La batteria è ben ripresa ma non convince del tutto il livello dei tom medi e alti (si sentono pochino). Ottime le voci (anche i cori sono presenti ma non invadenti) e la resa degli strumenti a fiato (sax e flauto).
Consiglio l'ascolto in Dolby 5.1 il più equilibrato. Anche l'ascolto in stereo è molto convincente. Dipende dai gusti.
Video
Qualche sfarfallamento marginale di poco conto, per il resto la qualità è più che accettabile. In HD si nota qualche leggera imperfezione della resa cromatica delle luci e dei mega schermi posteriori, ma sono difetti veramente minimi.
Il palco
Semplice e ben disposto, con il cantante che ha due posizioni possibili, una alta molto suggestiva, e una allo stesso livello degli altri.
Batteria sulla destra leggermente sopraelevata così come la posizione del tastierista. Bei mega schermi posteriori molto definiti e luci di grande effetto, molto eleganti e ben disposte e programmate.
Set list
1. "Watcher of the Skies" - Un inizio spettacolare, suonata e cantata davvero alla grande. Splendido King alle tastiere (mellotron e poi hammond)
2. "The Chamber of 32 Doors" - Struggente, Sylvan ha una voce davvero evocativa
3. "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" - Anche qui grande prova vocale di Sylvan
4. "Fly on a Windshield" - Strumentale suonato alla grande
5. "Broadway Melody of 1974" - Bella, semplicemente bella
6. "The Lamia" - Non mi è piaciuta affatto la prova vocale di Nik Kershaw. Peccato, perchè il brano è uno dei miei preferiti
7. "The Musical Box" - Stratosferica, al termine tutto il teatro fa una standing ovation meritatissima
8. "Shadow of the Hierophant" - E' un brano di Steve scritto con Rutherford. Non mi ha mai esaltato, troppo ripetitivo.
9. "Blood on the Rooftops" - Delicata, struggente, bella la voce di Gary O'Toole
10. "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers" - Uno degli strumentali dei Genesis che più mi piacciono, suonato molto bene
11. "In That Quiet Earth" - Vedi sopra
12. "Afterglow" - Sognante ed eterea al punto giusto, ottima voce di Gary
13. "I Know What I Like" - Divertente, con una sezione centrale strumentale quasi jazz
14. "Dance on a Volcano" - Esplosiva, dirompente, voce mozzafiato
15. "Entangled" - Delicata ma un po' noiosetta. La voce di Amanda è bella ma rende il brano un po' soporifero
16. "Eleventh Earl of Mar" - Bellissima, evocativa, grande prova vocale di Sylvan
17. "Supper's Ready" - 22 minuti di puro godimento musicale. Fantastico Sylvan quando sale sulla sopraelevazione per cantare "666 is no longer alone..." illuminato dall'alto...
Encore
18. "Firth of Fifth" - Suonata come deve essere, con tutta la sua bella intro al piano e il finale onirico. Stupenda
19. "Los Endos" - Finale epico, con brevi inserti di pezzi di Steve ("Clock" fra tutti) e parte finale molto curata (con anche la voce di Sylvan che canta le due strofe di "Supper's")
