Redenzione.
Era di questo che gli Stratovarius necessitavano da molti anni, di un qualcosa che potesse riuscire a farli rinascere in senso artistico, oltre che riassestarsi in quei rapporti umani che troppo avevano danneggiato il gruppo negli ultimi quindici anni. Ma poteva un gruppo come quello dei finlandesi, proprio di natura musicale come genere restio a cambiamenti, riuscire a trovare una soluzione?
La chiave per poter andare avanti, e spiace a dirlo, era proprio Timo Tolkki. Autore di veri e propri pilastri del Power Metal come "Episode", "Visions", e "Fourth Dimension", Tolkki non si può definire certo un musicista passato per caso, ma da quello che è trasparito negli ultimi ann, la sua eccessiva voglia di cambiare, il mettere nel mezzo delle composizioni i propri problemi personali, e la devastante depressione che lo colpì nel 2004 in seguito ad un accoltellamento durante un concerto, non migliorarono la situazione.
In aggiunta a tutto ciò, le ultime uscite degli Stratovarius fra il 2000 e il 2005 rappresentarono, come non se bastasse, la goccia che fece traboccare il vaso. Disfattasi la band poco dopo il termine del tour per "Elements: Pt. II", e riformatasi poi agli inizi del 2005 con la pubblicazione dell'omonimo "Stratovarius", i risultati furono peggiori di quanto ci si potesse aspettare. Troppe sperimentazioni inutili, una band che ormai ruotava attorno solo all'egocentrismo di Timo Tolkki, che più volte nelle interviste si riferirà al gruppo non come un insieme di musicisti, ma come un prodotto sul quale cercare di recuperare popolarità.
Nel 2008 Tolkki abbandona volontariamente gli Stratovarius, cedendo senza troppe pretese il nome del gruppo ai suoi ormai ex compagni, e si ritirerà in vari progetti solisti, i quali non vedranno più brillare quell'anima geniale che negli anni 90' diede vita a veri e propri capolavori, ma solo un'ombra rinchiusa nella sua autoconvinzione di superiorità. Gli Stratovarius nel Giugno dello stesso anno decidono di continuare, con il cantate Timo Kotipelto e il tastierista Jens Joahnsson rimasti come membri originali, senza l'apporto di Tolkki al gruppo. Andare avanti senza colui che aveva apportato quei cambiamenti che avevano permesso al gruppo di farsi conoscere, senza quella persona che era dietro ad ogni pezzo degli Stratovarius, ma che allo stesso tempo era diventata troppo instabile. Scelta giusta o stupida? In un primo momento avrei optato per la seconda, ma il passare degli anni ha dato ragione a Kotipelto e soci, ma andiamo con ordine.
Dopo la pubblicazione di "Polaris" nel 2009, e "Elysium" poi nel 2011, al quale seguì l'anno dopo un DVD live, gli Stratovarius avevano ritrovato dopo parecchie fatiche il loro sound tradizionale, ma se i due album citati servirono perlopiù come un gradevole ritorno, il successivo avrebbe dovuto avere il ruolo di confermare lo stato in cui la band finlandese si trovava, e nel 2013 con l'uscita di "Nemesis" ci riuscì a pieno. Un disco che suonava fresco di ispirazione e di ritrovata capacità creativa, che sembrava quasi persa dai tempi di "Infinite".
Nel 2015 esce "Eternal", disco che ha il compito di continuare a proporre lo stesso livello di qualità del precedente, cosa non da poco. L'album, seppur non si avvicini agli standard di "Nemesis" riesce comunque a farsi più che apprezzare, in generale per varie scelte. Una è quella di Kotipelto di cantare su tonalità più basse, in modo da dare ad ogni pezzo un atmosfera diversa, senza sforzarsi eccessivamente con il rischio di risultare piatto, come su pezzi passati come "Find Your Own Voice". La seconda è stata la volontà iniziale di non voler pubblicare un altro album in stile Power Metal, ma di voler sperimentare, via che è stata però subito messa da parte e che, a testimonianza di Joahnsson, potrebbe essere ripresa nella successiva uscita.
"Eternal" riesce comunque ad ottenere un'ottima impressione, grazie a pezzi in pieno stile Stratovarius, come "My Eternal Dream", nel quale le tastiere non giocano per la prima volta un ruolo principale, andando ad offuscare le chitarre e gli altri strumenti, ma andando a creare un ottimo contorno, o ancora "In My Line Of Work", dove calza a pennello la scelta di Kotipelto per la voce, scritta sopra. Mediocri e in gran parte prevedibili le due semiballad, scritte entrambe da Joahnsson, "Man In The Mirror" e "Fire In Your Eyes", con la seconda che sarebbe accettabile per un gruppo alle prime armi, ma da un gruppo come gli Stratovarius non è che la solita minestra già riscaldata. Funziona più che bene "Few Are The Those", che ha dalla sua uno dei più bei riff dell'album, e che mette in risalto il mixaggio pressochè perfetto che è stato fatto per la batteria, e discorso similare può farsi anche con "Shine In The Dark", più orientata sui mid tempo nelle prime parti, ma che tutto sommato risulta più che buona. "The Lost Saga" è uno dei pezzi dal minutaggio lungo, in questo caso 11 minuti, che gli Stratovarius hanno sempre messo nei loro album, e quest'ultimo non si discosta molto dai suoi precedenti, molto evocativo nella prima parte grazie a un bellissimo lavoro di Jens dietro le tastiere, e una parte centrale da brividi.
Se non vi sono mai piaciuti gli Stratovarius, non cambierete certo idea ascoltando questo "Eternal", e anzi, forse resterete sempre più convinti di non dover mai necessitare di sentirli. Per chi invece non disdegna questo tipo di sonorità, potrebbe trovarsi davanti un album suonato in maniera più che ottima, riuscendo a far rivivere per quasi un'ora di ascolto i bei tempi che furono per questo gruppo, con uno sguardo al passato, ma eivtando di fossilizzarsi nella nostalgia.
E forse è proprio questo il miglior pregio degli Stratovarius odierni, aver avuto il coraggio di cambiare e andare avanti, con una lenta ma graduale risalita musicale, senza un fardello che li opprimesse. Ottimo lavoro.
