Nel 1995 viene pubblicato il nuovo lavoro della famosa band finlandese chiamata "Stratovarius". Questo album è molto diverso dai loro precedenti "Fright night", "Twilight time"e "Dreamspace", soprattutto per l'entrata in scena del nuovo singer Timo Kotipelto, una delle voci più prestigiose nel campo del metal, che sostituisce Tolkki in modo tale che costui si dedichi esclusivamente a suonare la chitarra.
Il disco è ricco di riff travolgenti, caratteristici di questa band, che si alternano a passaggi acustici in modo tale da creare atmosfere talvolta cupe, talvolta gioiose... ma esaminiamo uno per uno i testi: "Against the wind", tipico brano speed power, apre le danze come se fosse un vero e proprio cavallo di battaglia caratterizzato da un ritornello lodevole e impossibile da non cantare a squrcia gola! Si procede con "Distant skies", canzone degna di lode come la precedente per il suo chorus indimenticabile. "Galaxies" è, a mio giudizio, uno dei pezzi migliori dell'album, introdotto da una bellissima parte con la tastiera per poi procedere meglio, come se fosse un inno nazionale. "Winter" invece è un pezzo lento e acustico dove la voce di Kotipelto sembra un lamento ricco di malinconia per poi trasformarsi in un pianto disperato. "Stratovarius" è una strumentale che crea il giusto equilibrio tra power e melody. "Lord of the waste land" è al contrario immensa, travolgente e cupa. "030366" avrebbero potuto risparmiarsela,ma guardando il lato positivo la considero come una semplice pausa, collocata al punto giusto prima di giungere a quelli che giudico i capolavori dell'album, "Nightfall" e "We hold the key": il primo ha un atmosfera rilassante simile a quelle create dai Pink floyd, ma molto più melodica (qui la bravura di Tolkki è semplicemente eccezionale e meravigliosa!); l'altro invece parte con una profonda cavalcata sostituita successivamente da un passaggio acustico e lento per poi procedere ancora meglio con un Kotipelto che sfodera tutta la sua capacità vocale tale da fare invidia a molti cantanti! "Twilight simphony" è un pezzo melodico che crea quasi un' orchestra memorabile. L'album si conclude in maniera buona con una strumentale acustica "Call of the wilderness".
Ottimo album degno di fama, assolutamente da avere per chi ama questo fantastico gruppo!
