Eccomi tornato! Sperando di piacere più della volta scorsa, torno a recensire l'album per eccellenza dei Super Furry Animals: Radiator.
Uscito nel lontano agosto 1997, raccoglie 14 composizioni di una freschezza pazzesca, comunque mai banali.
L'apertura è affidata a "FurryvisionTM", un intro all'organo di un minuto e mezzo, che sfocia nella prima song, "The Placid Casuals", energica e alla Peter Gabriel. Giunge poi la prima perla: "The International Language Of Screaming", il secondo singolo estratto, che in poco più di due minuti concentra cori alla Blur (sentire i la la la la e non pensare alle loro composizioni del periodo "Parklife/The Great Escape" è impossibile) e reminescenze del Beck più melodico. La quarta traccia è "Demons", ultimo singolo estratto, e qui il ritmo rallenta, per una ballata orecchiabilissima con tanto di assolo di tromba... è una delle tracce più psichedeliche dell'album.
Dopo un minuto di "Short Painkiller", altra composizione sorretta da suoni psichedelici, si giunge a "She's Got Spies", un misto di pop-punk, soul ricco di hand claps, godibilissimo e in pieno stile Super Furry Animals.
Poi arriva l'ennesima perla, "Play It Cool", nonché terzo singolo estratto. Qui il ritmo è trascinante, e nel ritornello si ascolta un falsetto impossibile alla Mika.
"Hermann Loves Pauline", primo singolo estratto, è invece caratterizzato da sonorità alla Pulp, con un arrangiamento vocale impossibile e un ritornello ultra-catchy. La strofa è semi-rappata, una rarità nel repertorio SFA (forse il rap è solo presente nell'ultima, "Inaugural Trams"). Dopo la punteggiante "Chupacabras", ecco un altro super brano: "Torra Fy Ngwallt Yn Hir", con sonorità sempre alla Blur. Dopo "Bass Tuned To D.E.A.D", ballata psichedelica, ecco arrivare uno dei brani più folk dell'album: "Different River", che sa molto di Beatles più psych. Chiudono "Download", lentone pauroso e "Mountain People", che inizia come un brano tipicamente brit, per chiudere con una coda drum'n'bass (se così posso definirla), che anticipa le sonorità che si riscontrano nell'album "Rings Around The World", altro capolavoro del gruppo.
Anche questa rece finisce qua, con due appunti però: la copertina è un altro super capolavoro a opera di Pete Fowler... bellissima!
Inoltre, nel 2005 è uscita una versione deluxe di "Radiator", con un secondo cd di b-sides, che di "b", a modesto parer di chi scrive, hanno ben poco.
Sperando di non venire massacrato come con la prima recensione, vi saluto. Siate buoni nel giudicarmi eh! Sono un neofita... potrei scoraggiarmi, offendermi e non scrivere più!
