Appena dopo 2 anni dall'ottimo "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy" i Symphony X ritornano con "Twilight In Olimpus", beh, questo cd si mette tra due lavori immensi (il secondo è "V" per chi non lo sapesse...) e non posso considerarlo al loro livello, però diciamo che è piacevole.. si rimane nel loro tipico stile prog-metal epico con accenni di power.
Si parte benissimo con "Smoke And Mirrors" che rappresenta perfettamente il loro sound, traccia ottima, (il riff d'apertura di Michael Romeo è fantastico!!!) nella parte strumentale ci accoglie una melodia profonda e sentita che è veramente da applausi, peccato per il seguito dove si esagera con gli assoli, ma ci si riprende subito con il ritmo avvolgente di questo pezzo. "Church Of The Machine" è diventato un loro classico con buone idee ma anche un pò di caos in alcuni tratti, però nel complesso la definisco apprezzabile. "Sonata" è il preludio all'ottima "In The Dragon's Den" che è il miglior pezzo del lavoro, ottimo ritmo, brano potente e carico, unico difetto: dura troppo poco!!!!! Segue "Through The Looking Glass": inizio strumentale tipicamente progressive con tastiera in primo piano, cambio di ritmo nella parte centrale per poi tornare nel sound della traccia, acenni di melodia nel finale senza però mai impressionare più di tanto... un pò confusionaria, cioè, le idee ci sono tutte, ma a mio parere hanno voluto mettere troppe "cose" in questo pezzo.
"The Relic" parte veloce (mi ricorda masquerada quest'inizio...), ottima parte strumentale dove c'è da apprezzare la bravura dell'accoppiata chitarra - tastiera che ci tira fuori due assoli degni (quasi..) di Petrucci & co. In "Orion - The Hunter" atmosfera leggermente più calma rimanendo però nel sound delle precedenti traccie, non sento nessun spunto creativo da questo brano, anzi, da notare ancora una volta il pezzo caotico nella parte strumentale, ma che viziaccio!!!!! (l'avranno preso dai Dream Theater per caso???) Chiude "Lady Of The Snow": inizio con suoni orientali a stile Tool, da notare il bell'assolo profondo ma allo stesso tempo potente di Romeo dopo appena 2 min. che ci dà ossigeno prima di ritornar nelle atmosfere tranquille di questa traccia che, nel ritornello, mi ricorda molto "Candlelight Fantasia" (dell'album precedente).
Così finisce "Twilight In Olimpus", beh, che dire... buon album, le idee ci sono, ma mi aspettavo di più da loro, soprattutto alcune parti strumentali devono migliorare (e lo faranno ottimamente!), però nel complesso posso dargli, anche se non lo merita, un bel 3,5 quasi 4: prima di tutto perchè sono i Symphony X e nutro moltissima ammirazione per loro; secondo: Romeo è un genio che compone musica straordinariamente bella e sà tirare fuori ad ogni album una melodia fantastica... ed infine non si può dare meno ad un gruppo che due anni più tardi comporrà "V - The New Mythology Suite", a mio parere uno degli album più belli mai ascoltati in vita mia.
