Comincio con una parola che comprenderete solo leggendo la recensione: INAUDITA.
Nel 1969, sull'onda del nascente hard rock, i Ten Years After esponevano al mondo la loro idea su come intendere il genere con l' album "Ssssh". Reduci dalla produzione di tre dischi blues, uno migliore dell' altro, l'opera è da considerarsi il primo esempio di rock suonato dal gruppo, peraltro con buoni risultati, anche se rimane evidente una certa influenza blues.
Si parte quindi con "Bad Scene" che fa capire subito che i Ten Years After sono cambiati. Chitarra distorta (fatto insolito per Alvin Lee, che ci aveva abituato a pennellate sempre molto chiare e pulite), ritmo incalzante, voce incazzata e come al solito assoli strappabudella da lasciare a bocca aperta.
Tocca a "Two Time Mama" spezzare la tensione con un country - rock spensierato che ci riporta sulla Terra prima che "Stoned Woman" rovini di nuovo tutto. Un altro esempio decisamente ben riuscito di hard rock, con assolo annesso (tanto per cambiare) velocissimo. Come Lee nessuno mai prima d'ora.
Viene poi il momento di "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl", unica cover del disco, che la band reinterpreta alla perfezione, con il basso di Leo Lyons che suonato a volumi decisamente alti stende il tappeto ideale per? indovinate un po'? un assolo memorabile di chitarra. Ad esso si aggiunge pure una bella sezione di batteria (da non dimenticare che ci sta pure lui!).
E come in ogni album hard rock che si rispetti, la canzone per la propria amata: "If You Should Love Me", che parte su toni rilassati per sfociare mano a mano che il brano si sviluppa, con le urla di Lee che dichiarano tutto il proprio amore per la fortunata a cui è dedicata 'sto po' po' di canzone.
Qui c'è posto pure per l'organo (strumento musicale si intende) di Chick Churchill, che in questo album rimane un po' in disparte rispetto ai precedenti.
Restiamo in tema con "I Don' t Know That You Don' t Know My Name", pezzo relativamente breve (2 minuti) ma comunque orecchiabile e piacevole.
"The Stomp", con basso in evidenza che scandisce il ritmo, lascia spazio anche al Churchill in una canzone che rimane in mente soprattutto per il riff che percorre tutta la canzone.
Chiudiamo in bellezza il disco (della durata di 33 minuti circa) con "I Woke Up This Morning" dove la Gibson ES 335 si esprime in maniera inaudita (e ripeto inaudita) tra le mani di uno tra i chitarristi migliori che le mie orecchie abbiano mai sentito.
