Uscito nell'autunno del 2000 questo e` il lavoro che meglio rappresenta la carriera del combo di Helsinki, summa perfettamente riuscita del passato glam-rock della band con l'attitudine "dannata" del precedente "Wasting the Dawn".
Lavoro del cambiamento soprattutto a livello vocale, dove Jyrki abbraccia tonalita` assai profonde e cupe mentre l'apporto dei tasti d'avorio si rivela elemento portante nel suono dei nostri. Atmosfere languide e vellutate si susseguono costanti per tutto il lavoro, aiutate da un mixing carico di eleganza, abile nel filtrare la vena rock dei nostri in un imbuto dark-romantico di facile presa.
Caratteristica peculiare di "Blessed Be" e` incarnata dalla presenza di "hit songs" a profusione, pezzi veloci e mai noiosi dotati di ritornelli dalle armonie azzeccatissime che si imprimono nella mente con grande rapidita`. Nonostante cio` l'aspetto intimista non viene trascurato grazie a raffinati arrangiamenti vagamente "gothic" che donano al disco in questione un'aurea ombrosa e carica di nostalgica tristezza.
L'apertura di "Framed in Blood" lascia immediatamente arguire uno stile fresco e ritmicamente energico, in bilico tra il chitarrismo grove'n'roll di Bazie/Timo-Timo e la calda timbrica di Jyrki, il tutto sapientemente infarcito da keys lacrimose.
Ottime le successive "Gothic Girl" e "The Chair" che mantengono il "pace" emotivo elevato, indovinato intrecciarsi di refrains dalle velleita` dark-rock rivisti in una versione ai limiti del radiofonico, senz'altro abili nello strizzare l'occhio a sonorita` vicine al gothic-pop di matrice britannica.
"Velevet touch" rivela il lato piu` scuro della band finnica, lenta ed uggiosa, imbastita su bridges tastieristici di sicuro effetto mentre la "narrazione" vocale scende nel baritonale piu`profondo possibile (Type o'Negative).
Si segnalano anche la tenera ballata "Stolen Season" dolcissima tra loops electro-dark e vocals leggiadre, e l'energia ficcante di "Angel on my Shoulder" nella quale i 69Eyes accentuano l'aspetto piu`marcatamente "heavy" del loro suono.
Il finale si assesta su ritmiche sostenute, libera lo spirito aggressivo appartenente al passsato del quintetto e lascia abbastanza spiazzati, in forte contrasto con la delicatezza della prima parte. Nelle tre tracks rimanenti si staglia "Wages of Sin" ,dominata da riffs velenosi, un drumming imperioso, solos impazziti e la "sporcizia" del cantato. Ottima e sorprendente.
In conclusione il disco in questione rappresenta l'anello di congiunzione tra passato e presente del gruppo nonche`, a mio modo di vedere, il lato piu` talentuoso di Jussi e soci, in grado di mantenere una credibilita` di matrice "metal" poi irrimediabilemte perduta nei successivi platters. Ruvido e vellutato.
