Veterani della scena finlandese i cinque rockers di Helsinki si ripresentano nel 2004 con la loro settima fatica al nome di "Devils". Che dire ? Nessuno dei clichè che li hanno resi popolari viene qui stravolto o modificato, di conseguenza i loro detrattori avranno senz'altro feroci critiche da rivolgere a Jyrki e soci. Chi invece ne ha apprezzato la proposta troverà con questa nuova fatica discografica la perfetta combinazione tra passato e presente della band nordeuropea.
Ci troviamo, infatti, di fronte ad undici capitoli in bilico tra chitarre vicine al rock'n'roll più classico ed atmosfere infarcite di keys decadenti e vocals profonde, fosche, dalle arcinote inclinazioni dolciastro-romantiche. Tecnicismi praticamente inesistenti, tanto groove radiofonico e pezzi che si imprimono nella mente alla velocità della luce, il tutto impreziosito da un mixing vellutato, cristallino, molto attento nel non accentuare l'aspetto più ruvido della band. Influenze reminiscenti acts del calibro di Sisters of Mercy e Fields of the Nephilim si respirano a pieni polmoni mentre il cantato si mantiene baritonale, vagamente solenne ed assai vicino ai tenebrosi gorgheggi di Peter Steel di fama Type o'Negative.
Numerosi potenziali hits, dai toni dark-stradaioli di "Devils" alle malinconiche "Jimmy" e "Sister Charity" fino al groove irresistibile del singolo apripista "Lost Boys" tra riffs hard-rockeggianti e vocals energiche. Il romanticismo nebbioso si sfoga nella lentezza dell'introspettiva "August Moon" e nella ballata finale "Only You Can Save Me", dolce e nostalgica come una fitta nevicata. L'aspetto lirico non si discosta minimamente dai precedenti lavori, vertendo sull'aspetto amoroso-triste-darkeggiante vicino ad altre realtà finlandesi come Him o Charon, quindi nessuna sorpresa anche qui. Lavoro destinato esclusivamente ai fans del combo ed a chi apprezza un hard-rock velato di decadenza ma sempre immediato ed urgente.
Chi cerca riffs potenti, rabbia metallica o plumbeo goticismo ne stia alla larga.
