Mio padre ha un negozio di dischi a Treviso, e mi è capitato spesso di curiosare qua e là alla ricerca di qualcosa di interessante. Avevo dapprima conosciuto gli Alan Parsons Project grazie ad un "best" (quello dell'83), ed ero deciso ad approfondire un suond che mi aveva colpito per la sua profondità e perfezione estetica, raramente sentita in precedenza. Avevo letto ottime recensioni di "The Turn of The Friendly Card" e mi affascinava quell'originale copertina di chiara ispirazione gotico-medievale: mi sembrava più che lecito appropriarmi di un disco che è considerato da molti seguaci del Project come quello che corrisponde maggiormente allo stile del gruppo. L'album mi ha appassionato subito e ricordo una grande soddisfazione nel momento in cui l'ho ascoltato la prima volta, piacere che provo tuttora.
E' certamente più lussureggiante dei lavori che seguiranno, in cui si noterà il tentativo di avvicinarsi talvolta alla forma canzone tradizionale (e purtroppo a volte quella romantica e melensa); è un album ricco di vere e proprie magie sonore, e presenta un sound di una pienezza sbalorditiva. Confesso di amare le sonorità molto ricche, e il disco a proposito di ciò è una vera e propria miniera di idee. Pop funky nella traccia iniziale, che ha una ouverture fascinosa e un intermezzo jazzato; disco-rock in "Games People Play", grande successo che presenta una sospensione nell'intermezzo strumentale, che sfoccia in un gagliardo assolo di chitarra; ballatona "Time", che ricorda però un po' troppo "Us and Them" dei Pink Floyd; ancora funky rock in "I Don't Wanna Go Home", brano grintoso e potente, dalla cadenza quasi blues; strumentale onirica "The Gold Bug": grandi tastiere e assolo di sax da tenere nel portafoglio. La suite che segue è formata da cinque brani che tuttavia sono trovo troppo diversi per poter essere raggruppati in un'unica traccia. Nella prima e nell'ultima parte si dispiega il tema principale (più incisiva la parte finale, grande chitarra); all'interno il cadenzato rock di "Snake Eyes", la fuga sinfonica della splendida strumentale, "The Ace of Swords", e la melodia secondo me un po' troppo melensa di "Noting Left To Lose".
Insomma un disco ammorbante, attraente, che si apprezza anche dopo infiniti ascolti: è il mio album preferito del gruppo. Riuscitissimo nella fusione di diversi stili, e interessante sul piano concettuale; ovviamente non deve essere ascoltato nella prospettiva di avere in mano un disco prog, cosa che secondo me non è. E se sul sito ProgArchives alcuni critici trovano disidicevole l'appeal pop-rock del disco (certamente più "commerciale" di "Tales" od "I Robot") penso che una buona dose di orecchiabilità coniugata a trovate strumentali immediate ma di grande fascino siano ben più incisive di molte sterili masturbazioni di alcuni gruppi prog.
