2002. I Neutral Milk Hotel si sono sciolti da quella che sembra un'era, gli Olivia Tremor Control hanno condiviso la loro stessa sorte. I Beluah esalano i loro ultimi respiri, gli Elf Power pubblicano un disco mediocre e uno di cover. La Elephant Six Recording Company sta per chiudere. E' proprio in questo momento piuttosto buio per i cari elefanti che la mente delle Mele Nello Stereo (gruppo che fino a quel momento ha prodotto, dopo un primo piccolo capolavoro, una serie di album carini ma non speciali e passati inosservati), tale Robert Schneider, se ne esce con un gran disco, che si rivelerà probabilmente il punto più alto della sua carriera assieme al già citato esordio.
"Velocity Of Sound" è un disco maturo, che raccoglie tutte le soluzioni inventate dalla band precedentemente, facendone tesoro e rielaborandole. Le zuccherose e acustiche chitarre degli inizi sono per lo più accantonate, per lasciare spazio ad un suono più distorto, compatto (salgono alla mente le chitarre dell'Hardcore Punk), senza però dimenticare la melodia, sempre molto presente. Notevoli sono le parti vocali affidate alla batterista Hilarie Sydney, anche se la voce quasi da bambino di Schneider raggiunge il suo massimo splendore.
Un album energico, forse di scarsa durata, ma di grande effetto.
Le nostre mele stringeranno poi un sodalizio con Eljiaj Wood, pubblicheranno un decente "New Magnetic Wonder" nel 2007, poi la cara Hilarie abbandonerà il gruppo, che se ne uscirà con l'imbarazzante "Travellers In Space And Time" (2010). Fine (spero).
