LA RECENSIONE
Cominciamo subito con il dire che questa band, purtroppo, qui in Italia non gode di grande successo. Negli Stati Uniti invece, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, il loro folk rock scatenato sta coinvolgendo un numero di persone sempre più ampio.
Dopo aver attirato l'attenzione di Rick Rubin (produttore già di Slayer, SOAD, RHCP, Mr. Johnny Cash e altri) i fratelli Avett hanno rilasciato in collaborazione con lui i tre album che li hanno portati al successo commerciale:
"I and Love and You" (2009)
"The Carpenter" (2012)
"Magpie and the Dandelion" (2013)
Comunque, lasciamo per ora i lavori più recenti e torniamo un po' indietro nel tempo.
"Four Thieves Gone", quarto album degli Avett Brothers, registrato nel 2005 in presa diretta in una casa di campagna a Robbinsville, North Carolina (The Robbinsville Sessions) in soli 10 giorni e lanciato sul mercato nel Febbraio del 2006.

THREE, FOUR.."
"Talk on Indolence" non lascia all'ascoltatore nemmeno un momento per ambientarsi ed esplode questo in improvviso canto/monologo rappato.
La voce straziata è quella di Scott Avett (banjo e chitarra).
Il breve "monologo" si chiude sul "THREE, FOUR.." di Seth Avett, qui inizia l'album.
Il primo pezzo prosegue con prepotenza come una sorta di "inno del disadattato malinconico" (leggere il testo completo) nelle corde di banjo, chitarra e contrabbasso accompagnate da mani che applaudono e che battono il ritmo sul legno degli strumenti.
"Talk on Indolence" essendo il pezzo che forse più di tutti permette ai fratelli Avett e i loro soci di scatenare in ogni modo la propria energia viene utilizzato, da ormai quasi 10 anni, per chiudere ogni concerto della band.
Superato questa introduzione adrenalinica Scott e Seth si concedono 5 minuti e 33 secondi per riprendersi.
"Pretty Girl From Feltre" parte con le perfette armonizzazioni vocali tipiche dei due fratelli e procede piacevolmente senza intoppi.
Proseguendo nell'ascolto incontriamo pezzi quali "Distraction #74", "Left on Lisa, Left on Laura" e "The Fall" in cui viene fuori tutto lo spirito folk del trio, non tanto nelle versioni studio quanto durante i live in cui ogni strofa viene spinta all'estremo.
Altri pezzi degni di nota sono "The Lowering (A Sad Day in Greenvilletown)", "Famous Flower of Manhattan" e l'energica "Denouncing November Blue (Uneasy Writer)".
Nonostante la piacevolezza e l'energia che l'ascolto trasmette, l'album, a mio parere, DEVE essere analizzato anche considerando le performance live.
E' proprio qui che i pezzi da interessanti e piacevoli diventano epici.
A partire dalla già citata "Talk on Indolence", durante le riproposizioni live l'album raggiunge livelli incredibili.
E' quasi impossibile pretendere di restare impassibili davanti ad uno spettacolo in cui il Folk Rock viene spinto al limite, tra decine di corde che saltano e strumenti che devono essere cambiati più e più volte durante un'esibizione perchè divenuti inutilizzabili, headbanging, tuffi nel pubblico e, spesso e volentieri, geniali improvvisazioni inserite all'interno dei testi.
Guardare gli Avett Brothers esibirsi su un palco significa guardare qualcuno che ama quello che fa e che, soprattutto, sa farlo davvero bene e questo è dimostrato anche nella versione studio di quest'album, un album puro e semplice.
