Recensire un disco misconosciuto ai più è un compito che mi sentivo di intraprendere, un'opera che racchiude la smania Wilsoniana di ricerca di novità, battendo piste sempre diverse in modo unico e personale.
Dopo la catastrofe dovuta al suo complesso di inferiorità davanti ad un'opera seminale quale Sgt.Peppers, il nostro molla il progetto Smile in cantiere partorendo a scaglioni perle sparse da Smile Smiley a Surf's Up con una creatività senza pari.
Certo quando si parla di Beach Boys sono molti a storcere il naso, per i più i Beach Boys sono quelli di "Barbara Ann" (che con tutto rispetto ha una sua genialità) ma è dopo Pet Sounds che le cose cambiano e questo ha fatto si che la mia curiosità mi portasse a sentire dove poteva arrivare il genio di Brian Wilson conducendomi fino a questo disco.
Ma parliamo di lui:
Il disco di cui l'anima è dichiaratamente Soul racchiude in sè echi Beatlesiani alla White Album per intenderci, un rimando in particolare a "Why Don't We do It in the Road?" è in "A thing or two", pezzo che dimostra le caratteristiche vocali di Wilson più grezze a tratti, intrecciarsi con un falsetto in controcanto davvero di gran effetto, altro pezzo interessante è "I'd Love Just Once to See You", una melodia di cui lo stesso McCartney rimase ammaliato tanto da riportarla nel suo album solista d'esordio, e non è tutto, continuando possiamo sentire nei solchi di "Let the Wind Blow", psichedelia barrettiana ammaliante ed ipnotica trascinarti fino in fondo in qualcosa che non ti aspettavi davvero.
A questo punto ti domandi:
Ma chi sto ascoltando?
Non avevo messo sù i Beach Boys?
E in effetti è proprio così che ci si sente al primo ascolto
Finisco la mia recensione trattando un altro pezzo per mè geniale che è "Here Comes the Night" di una modernità disarmante, a mio avviso certi richiami schizofrenici del cantato ricordano parecchio gli intrecci vocali di Frank Black dei Pixies... da rimanere basiti.
Consiglio a tutti questo ascolto, specialmente per chi non conoscesse i Beach Boys del post Pet Sound.
