Siamo da poco entrati nell'anno di grazia 1964. I Beatles hanno da poco conquistato i Stati Uniti con il singolo "I Want To Hold Your Hand", e "Can't Buy Me Love" non tradirà certamente le attese. Il progetto prinicipale è comunque realizzare un film e scriverne le canzoni ("A Hard Day's Night"). Nel marasma generale vengono estrapolate 4 tracce, di cui tre cover, per farne un'EP (mini album): "Long Tall Sally".
"I Call Your Name" è uno scarto delle composizioni di Lennon, tanto che fu affidata all'artista Billy J Kramer with the Dakotas. Qui John si riappropria della canzone ma non riesce a cavarne fuori molto. Una curiosità, ascoltate attentamente quando John pronuncia il titolo e immaginate che stia parlando in italiano. "Slow Down", sempre cantata da John, è una cover di Larry Williams. L'originale risale al 1958. Un rock and roll molto appesantito nel sound che non riesce a sprigionare elettricità. Il pezzo si regge principalmente sul pianoforte suonato dal produttore del gruppo, George Martin. "Matchbox" è una cover di Carl Perkins, registrata dai Beatles proprio mentre il suo autore originario era in sala con loro. Alla voce troviamo l'imbarazzante Ringo Starr che non riesce a dar giustizia a questo semplice pezzo rockabilly del 1957.
Si arriva finalmente alla title track (che in verità è la prima canzone dell'EP), "Long Tall Sally". Il quartetto di Liverpool prende a prestito una canzone di Little Richard del 1956 e ne fa un pezzo rock colmo di adrenalina pura. "Long Tall Sally" fu registrata in un solo colpo, così come la celeberrima "Twist And Shout" di John. Al pianoforte tintinnante troviamo l'immancabile George Martin. L'esecuzione vocale di Paul McCartney tocca le sue note più alte e sprigiona eccitazione in ogni singolo poro. Un classico dei primi Beatles.
