Forse non è abbastanza cool parlare di un gruppo che, anche nel 2005, si limita a scrivere semplicemente canzoni; ma sentivo il bisogno di farlo, e per vari motivi. Il primo motivo è che i Brian Jonestown Massacre non li conosce quasi nessuno, sottovalutati e dimenticati più di quanto dovrebbe succedere a qualcuno di questa caratura. Il secondo motivo è che di una dozzina di album che hanno fatto nemmeno uno era recensito qui. Il terzo motivo è quello per cui ho deciso di recensire proprio questo disco, ovvero semplicemente perchè è quello che sto ascoltando
Sì, come forse avete intuito intendo dire che tutti i loro dischi sono stupendi, tutti. Ci sono dei momenti un poco più bassi e altri un poco più alti, ma in generale è da 10 anni che il signor Newcombe e soci sfornano ottimi dischi che nessuno bada. Ma continuano. Anton Newcombe è il fondatore di quesa band, e l'unico membro rimasto fisso dall'inizio, ed è un personaggio perlomeno atipico: drogato e rissoso come tanti altri ma con qualcosa in più, quest'uomo vive ancora negli anni 60! Lui nei 60 nemmeno c'era, a dire il vero, ma sembra convinto che l'unica vera musica sia quella di quella decade. I Brian Jonestown Massacre nascono con l'intento (non dichiarato) di convincerci tutti che gli anni 60 non siano finiti (musicalmente parlando), e per quanto mi riguarda ci riescono, almeno per la durata dei loro dischi. Rock delle radici dunque, blues, psichedelia, parecchia droga e misticismo, pezzi coinvolgenti e dolorose ballate scritte da un uomo da sempre in lotta con il mondo.
Grandiosi. Il disco in questione è uscito nel '96, la loro annata più fertile visto che in un anno hanno dato alle stampe ben 3 bellissimi album, e tra i tre di quell'anno questo è il loro più rappresentativo. Sono presenti alcuni pezzi tra i loro più belli come "(David Bowie I Love You) Since I Was Six", "Cabin Fever", "Monster" e soprattutto "Straight Up And Down", brano presente in una versione da 4 minuti e mezzo e, alla fine, in una fantastica versione lunga più di dieci minuti. Questa cavalcata nel mondo dei bjm è uno dei pezzi più energici e positivi che abbia mai sentito, sul serio, non sto qui a descriverlo perché CONTO che lo ascoltiate. Non è finita, se non bastasse i bjm hanno di recente deciso di mettere tutti i loro dischi gratuitamente in download dal loro sito. Sì, gratuitamente cazzo, quindi fateVI la cortesia di scaricarne almeno uno o due e commentarli, diffonderli, amarli. Quelli più consigliati sono questo e poi "Their Satanic Majesties Second Request" (il loro album più psichedelico) e "Strung Out In Heaven" (quello più pop, in qualche modo).
PS: mi rendo conto di come questa rece sia la meno democratica di sempre, o quasi, ma il gioco vale la candela.
