Il circolo delle recensioni britpop non è ancora terminato !
E a chi frega poco, non la leggesse la mia recensione che poco mi frega anche a me ! Ho promesso che avrei trattato tutte le band brit pop degne di nota non presenti su questo sito e già l'ho fatto con i Bluetones (dedicando la recensione a due utenti/scrittori del suddetto DeBaser). Dei Charlatans c'è una sola recensione e non è neppure soddisfacente non trattandosi di un album studio ! Non quanto, dunque, per la metodologia di scrittura, che non oso assolutamente criticare.
E allora prendiamo in esame i Charlatans , prendiamo in esame il primo album che comunque risulta molto diverso rispetto agli altri. I Charlatans si evolveranno verso ritmi blues, rock e anche rock fino ad arrivare all'ultimo licenziamento di "Simpatico" che presenta una tessitura Indie mischiata a quella Reggae. Ma questa recensione non vuole glorificazione personale ma vuole riempire il vuoto che c'è e vuole dare un incentivo agli altri affinchè recensiscano altri album di questa interessante Band Mancuniana che dagli albori degli anni 90 è un faro instancabile di buona musica.
Buttati sotto il genere Baggy , i Charlatans facevano parte della scena madchester anni 90 (nel calderone c'erano anche [tanto per fare due nomi così, a caso] Stone Roses, Blur e Happy Mondays) e ne approfittarono con Some friendly entrando strisciando nella scena musicale di quel tempo.
Proprio come la scena Baggy vuole il packaging dell'album è un vero casino di colori, una confusione assurda. A partire dalla copertina che vedete qui a lato. Nella sua colorita apparizione però il booklet non è altro che un foglietto idiota con niente di buono, stampato pure male tra l'altro. Il genere della musica è caratterizzato da un abuso di organo hammond da parte del defunto "fratello Collins" , ed si vede che negli album a venire dopo la sua morte si sentirà la mancanza di quell'hammond suonato non divinamente ma ottimamente si può dire.
Le traccie di Some Friendly sono caratterizzate tutt al più dalla velocità, data sopratutto dall'organo di Collins e dalla batteria saltellante di Brookes. La voce di Tim Burgees è un sottofondo ricco di riverberi che neppure si sente (Ian Brooooooooooooooownnnnnnnnnn??????). Molto interessanti a riguardo le prime tre traccie dove sbuca anche il singolone "The only one I know". Oltre questo ci stanno anche divagazioni psichedeliche come in "Opportunity", lunga canzone di quasi 7 minuti che altro non è che un loop ben riuscito e scandito benissimo dalla batteria e dalla voce stonata e sospirata di Burgees. Abbiamo inoltre l'interlude strumentale di "102 pt. 2". Ritroviamo anche gli Happy Mondays in "Polar bear", con quella atmosfera vagamente da videogames anni 90. Il pop e l'atmosfera da videogioco lasciano spazio al rock, nel senso "meno stretto" del termine con "Believe you me" e la conclusiva "Sproston green". L'oscar del ritornello più orecchiabile lo diamo a "Flowers" la gemma pop del "lotto some friendly".
L'album sicuramente non è un capolavoro. Sarebbe azzardato dirlo! Ma rappresenta comunque qualcosa in quel calderone/mischia che erano gli anni 90 BRIT... ed è comunque un qualcosa che significa un buon album di esordio.
Forza, si accettano scommesse...

Questo secondo me è l'album più adatto per avvicinarsi a questa band.
Consigliato agli amanti del madchester sound (Stone Roses, Ispiral Carpets, Happy Mondays) ma anche del brit pop in generale.

Some Friendly potrebbe essere annoverato come uno dei primi album Brit Pop.
Nel disco si apprezza certamente la maestria all'organo hammond, un ritorno agli anni sessanta e la voce di Burgess strascicata e sensualoide.
