Undici anni di pausa, figli, carriere da solisti, un disco cancellato nel 2003. Questo è bastato a cambiare i Cranberries, band irlandese di rilievo negli anni '90, da ottimo gruppo alternative rock a un ordinario gruppo rock pop. Sembravano essersi ripresi nel 2003, dopo "Wake Up And Smell The Coffee", con singoli piacevoli come "Stars" e "New New York" (tutt'ora orfani), quando, dopo una serie di tour promozionali, decisero di prendersi l'ennesima pausa. La pausa ha poi preso i connotati del coma, e come qualsiasi medico può confermare, quando il coma si protrae per lungo tempo, i danni sono irreversibili.
"Too young, too proud, too foolish" dice Dolores nel primo singolo di "Roses" "Tomorrow", ma se erano troppo giovani negli anni '90, a questo disco sarebbe stato più appropriato un "too old". Come prevedibile hanno aspettato troppo per tornare e, nel frattempo, la musica è cambiata, e loro hanno trovato non pochè difficoltà ad adattarsi. "Tomorrow" non è un cattivo brano, ma nemmeno un ottimo brano come quelli di "No Need To Argue", e va del tutto in contraddizione con quello che hanno fatto: come si può dire "domani potrebbe essere troppo tardi" quando rimandi per undici anni un album?
Undici anni e metà del lavoro già svolto, sono serviti solo a produrre ordinari pezzi pop rock come "So Good" o "Loosing My Mind" che di fatto rimangono coerenti con la politica di tutti i brani non singoli del disco, strofa cadenzata e dolce, ritornello un po' sopra le righe e ripetitivo oltre modo. "Raining In My Heart", "Astral Projection", "Someday" ed "In It Together" sono brani scritti nel 2003, nel tentativo di tornare sull'onda, e di fatto conservano un po' del fascino delle vecchie canzoni dei Cranberries, che in un altro contesto sarebbero forse stati più valorizzati. "Show Me" ricorda curiosamente le canzoni del primo album da solista di Dolores e, pur essendo un brano banale e ripetitivo, riesce a trasmettere una certa energia. A mio parere i brani che da soli rendono gradevole o comunque particolare l'album sono "Schizophrenic Playboy", "Waiting In Walthamstow" e "Roses". "Schizophrenic Playboy" è stata scritta nel 2006 ed è il perfetto esempio degli obbiettivi a cui la band avrebbe dovuto puntare per la creazione di quest'album: una vena rock, una voce un po' acida di Dolores e tematiche che magari si discostano dal solito dramma amoroso. "Waiting In Walthamstow" può vantare degli archi non da poco in un pezzo dall'atmosfera noir, che dimostra che la sperimentazione non è ancora finita. "Roses" è una canzone che non presenta nulla di nuovo nello stile dei Cranberries, ma che per il testo e per l'esecuzione si dimostra un brano ispirato, dolce e malinconico. "Fire & Soul" è una canzone in cui, per la prima volta, vediamo chiaramente lo stile di Noel e non quello di Dolores, con una parte strumentale semplice ma orecchiabile,che avrebbe potuto essere meglio valorizzata da un testo più creativo. "Conduct" è il primo brano del disco, e benchè non sia eccezionale va lodato per la sua posizione, infatti è una buona presentazione di tutto il disco nei suoi 5 minuti e 10 secondi, in un album in cui le canzoni in media superano di poco i 3 minuti. Se si ascolta il b-side si nota che pare che abbiano fatto in modo di togliere tutte le canzoni allegre per nasconderle dietro qualche singolo.
Insomma un album un po' artificioso, studiato per un ritorno nel migliore dei modi, forse non troppo riuscito. A parer mio lo penalizza il fatto che esistano canzoni come "Zombie", "Linger", Daffodil Lament" o "Cordell" che rendono imparagonabile quest'album ad uno qualunque dei primi tre, e forse anche del quarto. Forse tra uno o due anni arriverà una nuova "Zombie", chissà, per ora questo è quello che abbiamo. In conclusione diciamo che i Cranberries sono intelligenti, solo non si applicano.
