Erano stati tra i pionieri della scena punk inglese, ma il punk era troppo limitato per loro: già nel 1977, manco il tempo di metabolizzare il relativo successo riscontrato con l'album d'esordio si fanno produrre il secondo LP, "Music For Pleasure", da tale Nick Mason: il disco di per sè è del tutto trascurabile, per non dire assai scarso, ma ai tempi della famosa maglietta ostantata dal "pistola" Sid il vizioso era un gesto abbastanza significativo, che la dice lunga sulla personalità forte della band capitanata da Dave Vanian, che nel corso degli anni intraprende nuovi percorsi e sperimenta nuova sonorità, raggiungendo l'apice del successo nel 1985 con "Phantasmagoria": dark, verrebbe spontaneo pensare a giudicare dal titolo e dalla copertina, ma è un'etichetta imprecisa e non del tutto veritiera, "Phantasmagoria" è semplicemente un maturo, affascinante e raffinato album rock dalle molteplici sfumature.
Oggettivamente una voce come quella di Dave Vanian, baritonale, calda, sensuale e mascolina, era assolutamente sprecata per canzoni in stile "New Rose", ed in questo contesto le grandi potenzialità canore del frontman sono finalmente sfruttate appieno. Una delle influenze più evidenti che caratterizzano "Phantasmagoria" è senza dubbio quella dei Doors, anche per la notevole affinità vocale tra Vanian e Jim Morrison, oltre ad un gothic rock allora sulla cresta dell'onda e reminescenze glam palesate dal look esibito all'epoca dal frontman: scenico, studiato. opposto ai canoni punk con cui si erano fatti conoscere. L'influenza dei Doors è particolarmente evidente nell'atmosfera avvolgente, cupa e sciamanica di "Shadow Of Love", scandita dal basso di Bryn Merrick e nella la più ritmata e psichedelica "There'll Come A Day", in cui sono le tastiere a reggere la scena oltre che in una "Street Of Dreams" di più ampio respiro, coinvolgente cavalcata dalle molteplici sfumature, energica ma al tempo stesso ricercata e quasi barocca nella sua ricchezza compositiva. Non manca un singolo di classe e radio-friendly come "Is It A Dream", melodia malinconica, riflessiva ed agrodolce che non rinuncia alla teatralità e all'energia proprie di questo album, mentre l'ironia tipica dei Damned è ben rappresentata da "Grimly Fiendish", divertente marcette darkeggiante dalle sfumature simil-beatlesiane che mette in mostra l'estro compositivo del tastierista Roman Jugg, artefice insieme a vanian della svolta gothic dei Damned, che qui sostituisce degnamente anche Captain Sensible come chitarrista e si cimenta come cantante (con buoni risultati) in "Edward The Bear", altro momento leggero e distensivo dell'album. A chiudere degnamente l'affascinante spettacolo teatrale di "Phantasmagoria" ci pensa "The Eight Day", altro perfetto esempio del sound pop-rock con sfumature dark sviluppato dai Damned per quest'album, impreziosita da un chorus particolarmente riuscito ed efficace, che lascia spazio alle atmosfere ovattate e crepuscolari dello strumentale "Trojans", dominato dalla melodia di un tremulo piano elettrico e da una movimentata fuga rock per il gran finale.
Il magum opus di "Phantasmagoria" è senza ombra di dubbio "Sanctum Sanctorum": estetica, atmosfere e teatralità gotica incarnate in musica nella forma più immediata e vivida: l'organo spettrale che introduce la composizione è quanto di più filmico ci possa essere, così come la composizione che si snoda con sinuosa eleganza tra climax intensi e momenti di grande atmosfera, in una serenata decadente in cui il connubio tra l'interpretazione magistrale di Dave Vanian e lo spleen creato da piano ed orchestrazioni dà vita ad uno standard di assoluta perfezione, uno stereotipo nell'accezione migliore del termine. La chiave di volta che ha fatto la fortuna di "Phantasmagoria", oltre alla stupenda cover di "Eloise" purtroppo non inclusa nell'album è senza dubbio la teatralità: questo è un album ricco e raffinato ma che non vuole essere nulla più che un prodotto di intrattenimento, alla maniera dei migliori Queen: l'incarnazione di un personaggio, di uno stile, di un'estetica, grande musica votata alla rappresentazione e non all'autoreferenzialità, rock carismatico e di altissimo livello.
