Noto che tra le recensioni di uno dei miei artisti preferiti "Devin Townsend" manca quella del disco "Accelerated evolution" e allora colgo al volo l'occasione.
Datato 2003 è il primo dei progetti solisti dove Devin viene affiancato da una band di supporto, sia per quanto riguarda la registrazione che dal vivo, proprio come negli Strapping young lad (per chi non li conoscesse si tratta del suo gruppo più famoso dedito ad un extreme metal dalle mille sfaccettature), a differenza di dischi come "Infinity" o "Terria" dove praticamente ha fatto tutto o quasi da solo.
"Accelerated evolution" è forse uno dei lavori più complessi e di difficile assimilazione della sua discografia e necessita svariati ascolti per essere apprezzato appieno o capito. L'album è improntato per lo più su sonorità rock/progressive fuse con il metal moderno e d'avanguardia, il tutto sorretto da mistiche tastiere che la fanno da padrone dall'inizio alla fine. "Depth carge" da il via alle danze in maniera abbastanza convincente, brano tosto e particolare a cavallo tra l'heavy metal e la psicadelia, ancora meglio la seconda traccia "Storm", pezzo nostalgico e molto melodico, musicalmente vicino ad un pop/rock stile anni 80 spinto verso sonorità più moderne. Con "Random analysis" invece si scende un pò qualitativamente, brano dal ritmo cadenzato che fa più da riempitivo, nonostante ciò presenta una parte centrale molto interessante. A questo punto seguono "Deadhead" e "Suicide", a mio parere i pezzi più belli e riusciti di "Accelerated evolution". La prima è una traccia lenta e sperimentale a cavallo tra Pink Floyd e Deftones, circa 9 minuti di meraviglioso trip musicale; la seconda invece si districa tra riff cupi e sinistri e accordi blues, canzone davvero superlativa che vi lascerà senza fiato fino allo stupendo incedere finale. Le restanti quattro tracce pur non raggiungendo i livelli delle due citate precedentemente rimangono ottimi pezzi che chiudono al meglio un lavoro ben curato e ben arrangiato nei minimi dettagli.
Infine consiglio a tutti di dare un ascolto ad "Accelerated evolution" con un avvertimento però: Townsend non è un'artista diretto e per poterlo apprezzare appieno bisogna prima capire il suo modo tutto particolare di fare musica, dopo sono sicuro che rimarrete sorpresi.
