Fa bene avere amici metallari. Fa molto bene.
Ogni tanto si può arrivare alle maleparole quando uno di loro dice qualche bestemmia, del tipo "Ma che te ne fai di Jimi Hendrix? Hai mai sentito Zacck Wylde?" ma tanto si sa che, per un metallaro doc (ovvero che appartiene alla categoria di "chi ascolta i dischi con i paraorecchi"), la musica non è musica se non la si può ascoltare roteando i capelli o con mignolo e indice alzati, fosse anche Morricone.
Comunque, dicevo, fa bene avere amici metallari, perchè questo ti dà l'opportunità di conoscere cose che non avresti mai immaginato, e fu così, infatti, che un bel giorno tornai a casa con il cd degli Strapping Young Lad prestatomi sottobraccio, arrivo in camera mia, lo metto e decido che fa schifo. Scusate, parere personale, ma io certe cose troppo brutalizze proprio non le sopporto, però almeno avevo conosciuto quel gran geniaccio di Devin Townsend, chitarrista e cantante dei suddetti. Gran bel tipo, Devin: con i capelli lunghissimi ma pelato sul cucuzzolo, non proprio un fiore dal punto di vista estetico, però un genio, che, a mio avviso, si fa apprezzare molto di più nei suoi lavori solisti.
Questo "Synchestra" è la sua seconda uscita con la "Devin Townsend Orchestra" ed è un disco fantastico; é stato amore a primo ascolto, e rimase nel lettore per almeno un mesetto abbondante (ci volle il live dei Mars Volta per scalzarlo) e mi innamorai di questo cd, con mia grande sorpresa, poichè, avendo purtroppo anch'io i paraorecchi, sono solito schedare ogni cosa che viene dalle categorie Brutal, Death, Thrash... nella sezione Cacca.
Questo disco no, perchè è tutto bello: dall'iniziale lentissima "Let It Roll" alla conclusiva "Sunshine and Happiness for all" (che sembra scritta dai Beach Boys negli anni 50) è tutto un capolavoro. Cambi improvvisi, frenate, ripartenze, divagazioni country (?!), per non parlare delle tastiere, fantastiche, che danno quel senso "orchestrale" alle canzoni e conferiscono un'atmosfera davvero particolare a tutto il disco.
Il pezzo migliore del cd è probabilmente "Pixillate", nove minuti di musica allucinante, dall'intro orientale con tanto di muezzin ululante all'incredibile ritornello che ti si stampa in testa, e quella parte strumentale stratosferica per quanto è bella e imprevedibile. Insomma, Townsend dimostra abbondantemente di essere un genio, un genio sui generis e stralunato (far partire un pezzo Hard Rock stile anni 80 con una... polka non vuol dire stare benissimo, giusto per citare "Vampira"). Al di là della tecnica dei musicisti (eccelsa), della produzione del cd (ottima) e del "suono" dello stesso, con quest'opera Devin Townsend ha dimostrato di essere davvero un musicista completo, che non ha paura di andare oltre il suo solito genere musicale, sfidando i suoi stessi ascoltatori (ovvero i metallari, sempre pronti a vaffanculizzarti ad ogni minimo spostamento di virgola).
Questo disco contiene un operazione che richiede, a mio avviso, parecchio coraggio da parte di un musicista, Devin l'ha avuto, e quindi gli puoi pure perdonare un paio di acuti dal vago sapore Epic (bleah) che sono nel cd, perchè è di Devin Townsend che stai parlando, e Devin Townsend può fare ciò che vuole.

Credo che sia impossibile non definire Devin Townsend... un genio.
Un disco da avere. Un cd che è la somma di dieci anni di capolavori di un artista che... darà ancora molto a noi fan.
