Secondo ed ultimo lavoro per la band di Spokane, realizzato nel Giugno del 2001 con un cambio di line up che vede l'abbandono del chitarrista ritmico Craig Johnson a favore di Alessandro Cortini, il quale, dopo lo scioglimento della band, farà ottima impressione a Mr. Trent Reznor tanto da arruolarlo in pianta stabile nei suoi Nine Inch Nails.
L'album fu poco fortunato nelle vendite, colpa anche della scarsa pubblicità della casa discografica, con cui, nel 2002 recisero il contratto e decisero di tentare ognuno strade differenti.
Come risaputo, il leader Myles Kennedy, complice di aver fatto da spalla ad un tour dei Creed, con l'abbandono di Scott Stapp ne ha preso il posto stabile, ribattezzando il nome del gruppo in Alter Bridge e pubblicando due album di pregevole fattura quali "One Day Remains" e il recentissimo "Blackbird".
"Second Skin" risulta più hard rock, ma meno incisivo del precedente "Fallout", che aveva il merito di fondere sonorità tipicamente Zeppeliniane con l'intimismo e la profondità di artisti come Jeff Buckley. Le chitarre si sporcano e acquistano più potenza rispetto agli esordi, il cantante usa qualche effetto vocale per impreziosire ulteriormente le sue già notevoli doti, come si sente nella prima traccia, "Sick and Wrong", coadiuvato anche dalla new entry Cortini ai cori.
Echi di Alice in Chains, musicalmente parlando, si sentono in "Loose Cannon", il giro di chitarra rimanda a "Dam That River", mentre la voce, filtrata e con "effetto megafono", a tratti somiglia a quella di Scott Weiland. Si alternano pezzi hard rock tipicamente a stelle e strisce come "High", "Backslide", "Flatley's Crutch", a ballate elettro/acustiche, "Eden", "Carry on", a tracce crepuscolari e cupe come la bellissima "White Flag".
"Summergirl", in chiusura, solo voce e chitarra nella prima parte, stupisce per la somiglianza sia vocale, sia strutturale, con le composizioni di Jeff Buckley, dove, nel crescendo finale Kennedy sfodera un acuto che fa ritornare alla mente quello di "Grace", tanto risultano identici.
Album sufficiente, a tratti discontinuo, messo insieme in fretta e furia per tentare di dare un futuro alla band, ma che, tristemente, ne ha decretato la fine.
