Nel 1978 in piena era Punk, il quartetto inglese composto da Peter Perret, Mike Kellie, Alan Mair, e John Perry si orienta verso un suono più morbido, amante del rock tradizionale in cui gli intrecci di chitarra valgono più del confusionale baccano del Punk. E' proprio in questo 1978 che esce il primo disco di questo gruppo "The Only Ones", disco piacevole e a differenza dei testi incavolati Punk disimpegnato: l'amore messo in disparte dall odio degli skin non è morto ma resta ancora a galla grazie ai testi di questo simpatico gruppo pubblicato dalla CBS come i contemporanei Clash. Sin dalla copertina si percepisce la totale disimpegnatezza del gruppo e soprattutto il romanticismo del suo leader Perret, dandy neoromantico nonchè chitarrista cantante e autore di tutti i brani del disco, canzoni uniche per suoni e melodie in tutto il panorama della New Wave.
Sin dal primo brano "The Whole Of The Low" che parte con un bel sax ci accorgiamo dell'intensità del cantato e del grande accompagnamento di una splendida chitarra che ricreano un pò con il solo di sax i suoni del Lou Reed di Transformer, sicuramente è un grande pezzo. "Another Girl, Another Planet" è il pezzo di successo del disco, coverizzato in seguito dai Blink 182, un pezzo abbastanza punk nella struttura ma melodico per quanto riguarda le liriche e le sonorità. Sicuramente il brano più commerciale dell'album e soprattutto orecchiabile, la voce di Peter secondo me non rende un granchè a differenza della prova del pezzo successivo "Breaking Down", il migliore dell'album. La canzone ha una strofa in pieno stile Dandy Warhol, e un ritornello formidabile dove il tetro cantato è accompagnato da un potente coro femminile, che rende il pezzo formidabile, degni di nota gli intermezzi in cui l'organo dà al brano una certa sonorità sixties, sonorità che si nota soprattutto nell'assolo del disco dove il basso fa un grande walkin' bass e la batteria tiene un tempo jazzato contornato da precise rullate. "City Of Fun" è nuovamente un pezzo veloce, qualche ricordo di Ramones, cori scolareschi e chitarre in puro stile Rock'n' Roll, forse peggior brano del disco. A chiudere la facciata è "The Beast" altro pezzo forte in cui spicca sempre la voce di Perret che da un contorno sofferente a tutto il pezzo, contorno perfezionato dalle rullate e dagli arpeggi di chitarra, pezzo in stile rock anni sessanta sopratutto per l'improvvisazione "californiana".
La seconda facciata si apre con "Creature Of Doom", pezzo con sonorità tipiche degli Ultravox di John Foxx, il pezzo si apre con accordi lunghi che immettono l'ascoltatore nel mezzo di questo schizzato pezzo, pieno di cambi di tempo, delimitato da una chitarra stridula e da un basso ripetitivo, basso eccezionale soprattuttonel ritornello in cui si ha un coro fantasmagorico femminile. Lo stesso coro si avrà anche nella ballata successiva, "It'S The Truth" è infatti una canzone in cui si sente le influenze di tutti i cantautori degli anni '70 (Lou Reed e Bob Dylan in particolare ). "Language Problem" è un'altro pezzo schizzoide, un breve viaggio, una discesa verso l'ignoto... paranoia. "No Peace for The Wicket" è una canzone lenta , molto bella e particolare, belli gli intermezzi di dolce chitarra e i cambi di tempo del ritornello in cui la parte ritmica da prova di talento, anzi conferma la bravura mostrata precedentemente. A chiudere la facciata ed il disco è "The Immortal Story", strani ritmi di batteria, giri di bassi melodici ed un cantato a più voci culminante nel caricante ritornello, il bridge non è un granchè... anzi boh è l'unica cosa che mi dice poco e niente del disco, ritmo alla "Kashmir" dei Led Zeppelin culminate in un totale casino di Feedback, rullate e rumori assortiti.
Il disco da molti snobbato è in realtà un ottimo disco, gradevole all'ascolto e veramente originale, niente da spartire con il disperato rock dei Joy Division o con gli sperimentali Pop Group e Pere Ubu , ma un buon album.
