Jack White di qua, Jack White di là, dischi e tournèe con i White Stripes, duetta con le Mummie Rotolanti in Shine a Light, compare in mille dischi come collaboratore e si permette di avere un side-project. Solo Mark Lanegan, Mike Patton e Dave Grohl riescono probabilmente ad essere così iperattivi nell'ambito musicale.
Eccoci così al secondo disco di questi Raconteurs, il seguito del fortunato "Broken Boy Soldiers". Nessuna campagna pubblicitaria, nessuna intervista per paura di far sentire in anteprima il disco ai soliti critici di turno.
Le differenze sostanziali rispetto al passato sono una maggiore coesione come gruppo, un suono leggermente più crudo e ispirato dell'esordio e la percezione che White sia diventato il deus ex machina del progetto.
"Consolers of the lonely" sembra il perfetto mix tra il pop-rock abbastanza tradizionale di "Broken Boy Soldiers" e il calderone sonoro impregnato di blues di "Icky thump".
C'era bisogno di tutto ciò? Assolutamente sì. Anzitutto perchè non cade mai nella banalità o nel richiamo fine a sè stesso, in secondo luogo per l'ottima alchimia sviluppata dall'incontro tra le voci di White e Benson (in molti casi sembra di sentire un'unica voce) e l'eccellente sezione ritmica dei rimanenti Greenhornes.
Il pezzo che intitola l'album fa da apripista: dopo una falsa partenza ci troviamo di fronte ad un pezzo rock molto energico con improvvise scariche elettriche che riportano alla mente alcuni passaggi stoner e richiami non celati ai primi Blue Cheer; "Salute your solution" è un garage molto tirato; "You don't understand me" e "Old enough" sono figliastre del debutto; "The switch and the spur" ha reminiscenze alla Kinks e un sottofondo mariachi (che ritroveremo più avanti nel disco, più precisamente nel soul di "Many shades of black" e nel garage punk di "Five on the five"); "Hold up" è un pezzo pop-punk che introduce il blues Zep-Stones di "Top yourself".
Il finale, affidato a "These stones will shout" (memore della lezione Page/Plant) e "Carolina drama", riscopre le radici folk che da sempre accompagnano il ragazzone di Detroit.
Catalogarlo come disco rievocativo di alcune sonorità anni '70 è riduttivo. La cura di certi particolari come alcuni cambi, i suoni e diversi inserimenti di idee cronologicamente fuori dall'asse temporale attual, collocano questo album una spanna sopra alle uscite sui generis di questi ultimi anni.
