"Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica", del 1964, è il primo ed unico vero disco del trio vocale, tutto al femminile, The Ronettes. Una sorta di girlband di oltre cinquant'anni fa. Nulla a che vedere con ciò che "girlband" rappresenta oggi nell'immaginario collettivo, anche perché questo lavoro è frutto della produzione del genio schizoide di Phil Spector.
La triade era composta dalle due sorelle, Ronnie Spector (al secolo Veronica Yvette Bennett) ed Estelle Bennett, più la loro cugina Nedra Talley. Ma la figura "portante" era senza dubbio quella di Veronica, moglie del noto produttore dal '68 al '74, voce principale del trio e personaggio carismatico conosciuto dai più come la prima vera cattiva ragazza del rock 'n' roll.
Diciamo subito che non si tratta esattamente di un effemminato "Pet Sounds" (che peraltro sarebbe uscito soltanto due anni più tardi). Non è né così perfetto e raffinato, né così fedelmente pop. Ma, appartenendo alla stessa epoca e bene o male alla stessa corrente musicale, ogni tanto le assonanze si fanno tangibili. Insomma, non un "Pet Sounds", ma un piacevole disco pop, logicamente dal retrogusto retrò e contaminato da marcate sfumature rock 'n' roll, all'epoca in pieno boom.
Contiene molte delle maggiori hits del terzetto, come "Baby, I Love You"; "Walking in the Rain"; una cover di "What'd I Say?" di Ray Charles che, tra le altre, appare anche sul box set dello stesso Spector; ma soprattutto l'arcinota "Be My Baby".
Quest'ultima è sicuramente la più rappresentativa dell'intera, e piuttosto breve, esistenza delle Ronettes, nonché fonte d'ispirazione per Brian Wilson e soci nella loro "Don't Worry Baby", che a detta dello stesso Wilson - il quale all'epoca definì il singolo delle Ronettes "la più grande registrazione pop di sempre" - rappresentava la "risposta al maschile" proprio a "Be My Baby".
Un ottimo lavoro pop dunque, epocale, ma che probabilmente non regge la famosa sfida del tempo, nonostante mantenga intatta la sua bellezza e in alcuni frangenti continui ad essere tuttora un'opera accattivante malgrado i quarant'anni e più dalla pubblicazione.
Che dire? Un passo che ha segnato un'era. Seminale per il pop. Forse non obbligatorio, ma straconsigliato a chi vuole approfondire la produzione di Spector, il suo "Wall of Sound" e, soprattutto, il fenomeno delle Ronettes - recentemente entrate nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - immergendosi gradualmente in quella che è stata la realtà di quell'epoca. Un'epoca che ha eiaculato tutto quello che oggi rappresentano la musica pop e quella rock.
