Avete presente quando alla fine di una recensione o presentazione di un album compare la scritta "ti è piaciuto? prova anche.."; ebbene, questo gruppo, i Theory Of A Deadman, sicuramente sono comparsi e compariranno sempre in una scritta simile riferita ai Nickelback..
Scoperti qualche anno fa appunto da Chad Kroeger, questi con i Nickelback hanno in comune veramente tutto: la casa discografica, la nazionalità canadese, i tour, il look, ed ovviamente lo stile musicale: il fatto è che ogni singola traccia di questo "Scars And Souvenirs" (che si traduce "vecchie ferite") sarebbe potuta figurare senza problemi in un album dei Nickelback, fatto, questo, che già da solo mi porterebbe a scartare questo album, sia perchè non sono esattamente un estimatore della band di Kroeger, sia perchè non è copiando altri artisti che si fanno grandi lavori musicali..
Ciononostante, credo che chi non aborri il genere possa comunque trovare qualche motivo di interesse in questo album: per esempio nella voce calda e potente del singer Tyler Connelly o nel buon lavoro chitarristico di Dave Brenner, e, per la verità, il grosso punto di forza di questo "Scars And Souvenirs" è proprio che questi due elementi sono spinti al massimo e si cercano di far brillare il più possibile in tutti i brani, con risultati alterni..
Ascoltando l'album, però, si evincono tanti grandi e piccoli difetti come il songwriting scadente, pieno zeppo di frasi fratte tipo "nobody wins when everyone's losing" e cose simili e l'eccessivo uso di parole volgari tipo "come on bitch" o "there's no fucking way" quando non è proprio il caso (oddio, non che io sia un puritano, il fatto è che questo songwriting proprio non si addice al tipo di musica, risulta insomma forzato), o l'eccessivamente chiaro calo di attenzione su alcune tracce rispetto ad altre (brani come "Crutch", "Hate My Life" o "Sacrifice" sono a dir poco.. "transitori"), senza contare che ascoltare l'album tutto d'un fiato è stancante e ripetitivo..
Alcuni brani che emergono dalla massa comunque ci sono: l'opener "So Happy", frizzante e divertente, la ballatona "By The Way", cantata col talentuoso singer Chris Daughtry, e "Not Meant To Be", con un ritornello a mio avviso davvero troppo catturante ed orecchiabile per essere ignorato; altri episodi particolari sono la spiazzante ed orchestrale "Little Smirk", che parla del personaggio di Connelly che ruba la macchina alla sua morosa con i bambini di lei nel bagagliaio e la hit "Bad Girlfriend", che però è davvero esageratamente Nickelback per piacermi, ascoltare per credere (che poi mi viene da sollevare un'altra critica di coerenza all'album: in una canzone il singer dice di essere "So Happy" ed in un'altra dice "I fuckin hate my life", in questa ruba la macchina alla sua ragazza, in quell'altra dice di avere una cattiva fidanzata ed in un'altra ancora piange per la sua assenza... mah..).
In definitiva, però, c'è anche da dire che i Theory Of A Deadman sono un gruppo giovane e, seppur povero sotto l'aspetto compositivo, che indubbiamente sa suonare; ora come ora trovo che difettino in personalità, ma ciononostante hanno solo 6 anni di esperienza e nessuno fino ad ora si e mai aspettato un capolavoro da parte loro.. quindi, non perderei le speranze per questi TOADM, sperando che facciano lavori migliori, e che magari si lascino simili vecchie ferite alle spalle.
