Quando si parla di indie rock americano non bisogna dimenticare un nome importante: i Throwing Muses. Fu la prima band statunitense a firmare con l'etichetta inglese 4AD, con cui in seguito avrebbero avuto a che fare anche i colleghi Pixies, i quali vennero tenuti a battesimo live proprio dai Throwing Muses.
La band all'epoca di questo album "The Real Ramona" era composta dai tre membri originari cioè Kristin Hersh e Tanya Donnely voci e chitarre, il batterista David Narcizo con l'aggiunta della new entry Fred Abong al basso. Questo fu l'ultimo lavoro in studio con Tanya Donnely (e l'unico con questa line up) che in seguito lasciò la band per entrare nei Breeders di Kim Deal e poi formò i Belly.
La discografia del gruppo include diversi album ma sicuramente "The Real Ramona" è il lavoro più completo, quello che riassume meglio tutto ciò creato dai Throwing Muses durante gli anni: una perfetta fusione di melodie pungenti accompagnate da una maggiore virata pop, che rende il risultato pregevole. In copertina una emblematica foto d'epoca che ritrae una donna borghese cotonata e scalza mentre guarda verso l'obiettivo con le mani giunte, il batterista David Narcizo dichiarò che era la nonna della Hersh. Sempre Narcizo disse di questo lavoro che il processo di registrazione fu teso poichè la Donnely voleva poi lasciare la band e quindi lavorare in quelle condizioni produsse tensione anche se loro erano tristi per la sua dipartita, inoltre aggiunse che il produttore Dennis Herring diede un contributo importante ma fu anche irritante durante lo sviluppo in studio.
Il disco, pubblicato nel 1991, ebbe un discreto successo trainato dai due singoli in rotazione su MTV: "Counting Backwards" e "Not to soon". Due brani del migliore pop rock che penetrano all'istante subdolamente nella mente. Da ricordare la potentissima "Hook in her head" splendida gemma pre-PJ Harvey forte del particolarissimo tocco alla batteria di Narcizo, brano che parte delicatamente per poi sfoderare tutta la sua grinta, uno dei momenti più altri dell'album. Inoltre "Ellen West" denuncia all'anoressia, la delicatezza armoniosa di "Graffiti", la graniticità di "Red Shoes", "Honeychain" e in chiusura "Two steps" le ballad per eccellenza, deliziose e ammalianti. Gli unici brani firmati dalla Donnely sono "Not to soon" e "Honeychain", tutto il resto è frutto della Hersh. Dodici pezzi di bellezza senza tempo che consacrarono definitivamente la band tra le migliori formazioni indie rock dell'epoca. Un disco purtroppo difficile da reperire al momento nei negozi e che meriterebbe di essere conosciuto anche da chi non ha vissuto (per motivi anagrafici) quel periodo musicale tramite una buona ristampa.
Dopo "The Real Ramona" i Throwing Muses continueranno ad incidere album con alti e bassi, ma sicuramente uno dei successivi da ricordare sarà il sempre valido "University" del 1995.
