Nel 1989 il cantautore Tom Petty, famoso in tutta l'America dal lontano 1976, decide di abbandonare per un po' la sua band di spalla The Heartbreakers, per dedicarsi (se così la si può chiamare) ad una carriera solistica, che durerà a livello di nome per qualche disco. "Full Moon Fever" è il primo di questi dischi, ma non solo: è anche la prova della maturità artistica di Tom Petty, della sua completa armonia musicale e, in un certo senso, spirituale. Forse perché è accompagnato da ospiti di calibro enorme, quali Roy Orbison e Gorge Harrison o il bassista degli E.L.O. (con i quali più avanti formerà i Travelling Wilburies), o forse è solo il fatto che ci ha messo il cuore a scrivere questa opera: e quando Tom ci mette il cuore non si può proprio rimanere delusi.
Ciò che caratterizza Full Moon Fever rispetto ai dischi precedenti è il sound: si coglie infatti una leggera virata verso gli anni Ottanta, verso un'atmosfera meno grezza e più raffinata dovuta soprattutto all'influenza marcante dell'amico e bassista Jeff Lynne.
Il disco apre con "Free Falling", che diventerà il cavallo di battaglia di Petty & Co., con il quale l'artista verrà per sempre etichettato e, giustamente, associato. Il pezzo è infatti uno dei più belli che Tom abbia mai scritto: con i suoi toni di voce, le sue parole, il modo in cui fa cantare la sua Rick & Backer, accompagnato dai fantastici coretti di Cambell e Lynne, riesce a esprimere e trasmettere una miscela di vari sentimenti, come la rabbia, tristezza, amore, solitudine, tenerezza... un capolavoro che non ha età!
Seguita subito da "I Won't Back Down", ormai celebre, che è accompagnata dalla melodica chitarra piangente di George Harrison: sa subito farsi strada nelle classifiche americane. Il sound risulta molto anni ottanta, e soprattutto molto differente da ciò che di solito ci si aspetta da Petty, ovvero una musica fortemente ispirata a Byrds, Beatles, Springsteen e Dylan. Aspetti che si ritrovano leggermente in "Love Is A Long Road", che, infatti, se non fosse stato per la tastiera d'intro, avrebbe benissimo potuto far parte del disco "Into The Great Wide Open". Segue un altro nuovo esperimento che Tom sente di dover fare: con "A Face In The Crowd", apre le danze alle sad-ballads, canzoni intense da pelle d'oca, elettriche ma malinconiche, la cui caratteristica è la sua epica ed emozionante voce, così dolce e triste allo stesso tempo. Pezzi del genere si possono sentire anche nei dischi successivi, soprattutto in "Wildflowers". E "Echo". Dalla malinconia si lascia posto al delirio più assoluto di "Running Down A Dream", un pezzo di riuscitissimo hard rock, dal riff di chitarra potente e dall'influente ritornello, che prende fin dai primi e deliziosi ascolti. Da lode è anche il megassolo finale, da cui si può ancora una volta affermare l'importanza della spalla destra del gruppo Mike Campbell.
Una virata di suono che si stacca dal resto delle canzoni in "Feel A Whole Lot Better", "Depending On You" e "Apartment Song" in cui Petty sembra tornare alle origini heartbreakeriane in stile "The Waiting", con riprese rock'n'roll e beat, in una deliziosa eccitazione melodica. A questo punto è proprio ora di imbracciare la chitarra acustica, e suonare la prima cosa che ti capita, come "Yer So Bad", semplice e geniale, che sa incantare con le vigorose pennate di plettro e parole di scherno. Una lode a parte va fatta a "All Right For Now", due minuti di poesia pura, di brividi e sentimenti, rappresentata da un arpeggio di acustica e la voce di Tom che fa da strumento musicale, così appassionata e struggente. A contrastare questo piccolo momento di magia capace di trasportarti lontano dal mondo reale, c'è "A Mind With A Heart On Its Own", un riuscito e divertente semi-gospel, con cori neri e tanto di reprise, che con un fading introduce la chiusura del disco, "Zombie Zoo": ancora una volta non ci si sarebbe mai aspettati da un disco di Tom una acustica cosi commerciale e moderna, ma non per questo poco apprezzabile, anzi, spesso le evoluzioni sono il frutto di una maturità artistica di grande valore.
Forse il disco più bello di tutti, insieme a Wildflowers, di uno dei migliori cantautori di sempre.
