Balance è il decimo album in studio dei Van Halen. Rilasciato nel 1995 ebbe un discreto successo vendendo fino a oggi più di 3 mln di copie in tutte il mondo. Successore del fortunato e bellissimo F.U.C.K. (anche se bisogna dire che tolto Diver Down, i Van Halen non hanno mai sbagliato un colpo), che portò anche un Grammy Award al gruppo. Balance è anche l'ultimo album in cui compare Sammy Hagar alla voce, difatti verrà cacciato dal gruppo poco dopo. Sicuramente il disco più cupo, oscuro e maturo che il gruppo abbia mai scritto.
L'album parte con "The Seventh Seal" aperto da un cantato di monaci. Pezzo bellissimo, accompagnato da un riff potente e ben eseguito da Eddie , in forma come sempre. Ottimo inizio. Segue la semi-ballata, molto orecchiabile e commerciale "Can't Stop Lovin You". Il risultato però è piacevole, e il pezzo è uno dei migliori del lotto. Subito dopo però troviamo il capolavoro dell'album. "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" è un pezzo da paura.Un riff minaccioso quasi ipnotico accompagna il pezzo, il testo poi è bellissimo. Il solo è uno dei più belli che il nostro buon vecchio Eddie abbia mai scritto. "Amsterdam" scorre via senza lasciare il segno. "Big Fat Money", torna ad alzare il livello del disco. Pezzo veloce e ben ritmato, da alzare a palla sullo stereo. "Not Enough" ci viene introdotta dalla strumentale "Strung Out". Il pianoforte apre la ballata del disco, "Not Enough" appunto. Bellissima, da ascoltare e riascoltare all'infinito. "Aftershock" è un altro grande pezzo che si ascolta con piacere. La seconda strumentale del disco è un solo di batteria a firma naturalmente di Alex Van Halen, che serve ad aprire l'ultimo brano strumentale del disco "Baluchiterium". Il pezzo compare solo nella versione cd, difatti nel vinile la traccia non è presente. "Take Me Back (Deja Vù)" è un pezzo molto bello con un testo dove ognuno di noi si potrebbe riconoscere. Tornare indietro , magari nel periodo più bello della nostra vita sarebbe il sogno di tutti.Il disco si chiude con quella che è la mia canzone preferita in assoluto del gruppo, "Feelin". Bellissimo l'arpeggio che apre (e chiude il brano), bello anche il ritornello e strepitoso l'assolo che Eddie ci regala. Traccia a mio parere che sarebbe diventata un cavallo di battaglia nei live se Hagar fosse rimasto nel gruppo.
Balance è il degno successore di F.U.C.K. è l'ennesimo grande disco del gruppo, da ascoltare e riascoltare in macchina, a casa, sull'ipod, insomma ovunque. Un applauso anche al grande Micheal Anthony, strepitoso come sempre insuperabile nei cori.
