Nel 1982 gli stadi e le concert hall sono stracolmi per i concerti dei Van Halen.
Il gruppo è all’apice del suo successo, il pubblico reclama a gran voce un nuovo album di studio dopo gli sfolgoranti successi dei grandi dischi Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women And Children First e Fair Warning. La band ritorna in studio per registrare in fretta e furia ciò che doveva essere un nuovo capolavoro, Diver Down.
Missione fallita: metà dell’album sono cover di pessima scelta, più adatte ad album di musica leggera che non ad un gruppo di hardrock come i Van Halen. Oh Pretty Woman, Dancing in the street, Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now, Happy Trails e Where Have All The Good Times Gone sono infatti pezzi del tutto inutili.
Ma anche ciò che la band scrive non è molto meglio: Hang ‘em high ha un cantato orrendo, Cathedral è un intro in cui Eddie gioca con gli effetti per chitarra, mentre Secrets è l’unico pezzo che dell’album si salva. Intruder è un pezzaccio uguale Sunday afternoon in the Park da Fair Warning, così come Little Guitars Intro è uguale a Spanish Fly da Van Halen II. Little Guitars è una canzone discreta, mentre The Full Bug l’abbiamo già sentita da qualche altra parte.
Questo album lo sconsiglio perché è una mera speculazione sul successo degli album dal vivo e soprattutto dei tour dal vivo precedenti. Diver Down è scarno come la sua orrenda copertina, un album messo in piedi senza idee. Bisognava proprio battere il ferro a tutti i costi finché era ancora caldo?

Van Halen dimostra di non volersi impaludare nei soliti riff, mostrando una cultura musicale vasta e un virtuosismo che va oltre gli assoli parossistici.
Diver Down è un oggetto a sé stante, godibilissimo, cantabilissimo, variegato e coraggioso, simbolo della coerenza e indipendenza artistica della band.
