Per chi ha avuto la fortuna di ascoltare Empires questa recensione potrebbe essere superflua: basta un ascolto per intuire la grandezza e la portata di quest'opera per chi non l'avesse ancora assaporata spero di dare un'idea, se si può, di quello che rappresenta questo platter.
Ma andiamo con ordine, il nome della band: VNV cioè Victory Not Vengeance, dice molto sul progetto di questo combo, dichiaratamente quello di unire passato e presente: il ricordo e la musica delle civiltà passate con la musica elettronica più moderna, questa musica è appunto l'EBM, o se vogliamo il synthpop più puro, non contaminato dalla brutalità dei Suicide Commando, o dalla commercialità degli Apoptygma Berzerek ma pieno di arpeggi e orchestrazioni restando comunque trascinante sul dancefloor tanto da creare un genere a sé, cioè il FuturePop.
Quest'album è il terzo lavoro del duo Aglo-Irlandese, datato 1999, e chiamato a riconfermare quanto di buono aveva fatto nelle relase precedenti. La riconferma giunge sotto forma di 8 tracce (più intro e outro) di elettronica discretamente ballabile, ma nonostante questo densa di emozioni.
Si inizia con "Kingdom" e "Rubicon", due canzoni abbastanza veloci dove le tastiere fanno la voce grossa, contrapposta invece a quella del cantato, dolce e sognante, per proseguire con "Saviour" un pezzo strumentale che si rivela il più movimentato del platter.
La successiva "Fragments" lascia un po' da parte le divagazioni più puramente wave e le tastiere, per una canzone quasi tutta drum-machine e voce, le parti di synth sono al minimo e il ritmo frenetico dei battiti scandisce testi che parlano di grandi opere future. "Distant", un lento guidato da archi elettronici, è il pezzo più anomalo di tutto l'album a cui fa da contraltare il trittico finale di pezzi veloci e ballabili.
Empires è uno degli album fondamentali del synthpop e di tutta l’elettronica alternativa in genere, nonostante questo è la massima espressione di una musica personalissima e originale che vede molti imitatori.
