Guardando le foto di Michael Poulsen, ho intravisto, tra i suoi tatuaggi sulle braccia, il celebre faccione di Elvis Presley e la vistosa scritta "Social Distortion". Non mi sorprende che il suo modo di cantare assomigli a quelli che, senz'altro, sono i suoi idoli. Soprattutto Elvis, che riesce molto bene a imitare. Quello che mi ha sorpreso è che canta in una heavy metal band: i Volbeat.
Questi quattro danesi hanno prodotto, fino ad ora, tre buoni dischi, simili per qualità e musica proposta. In Italia sono quasi sconosciuti, eppure hanno avuto molto successo nella loro patria e la voce si sta spargendo anche al resto d'Europa. Le migliori hits dei Volbeat si trovano nei due albums più recenti, cioè "Rock The Rebel, Metal The Devil" e "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood", usciti rispettivamente nel 2007 e nel 2008. Tuttavia l'album di debutto, del 2005, "The Strength / The Sound / The Songs", denota una qualità dei brani più costante, nonostante essi siano ben 15. Inoltre, lo preferisco agli altri due per l'impronta leggermente più grintosa.
Trattasi di metallo che picchia, suonato su tempi non velocissimi, ma sufficienti a farti venire voglia di ballare (o prender a spallate l'armadio). Gli strumentisti suonano, senza pretese, riffs semplici o brevi assoli tutt'altro che virtuosi, assegnando il ruolo di suprema protagonista all'ugola di Mr.Poulsen. Il cantante disegna melodie coinvolgenti, che spesso mi ricordano il Far-West (eppure non ci sono mai stato). La sua voce è talmente particolare che rende i Volbeat riconoscibili tra mille bands. E' una voce pulita, profonda, no-al-falsetto, che ammalia per lo stile alla Elvis (vedasi sample). In molte parti del disco, viene usato un tempo in 3/4, che fa molto rock n'roll (ho detto una boiata?). Il difetto principale di questo disco è la scarsa longevità: i riffs sono simili da una canzone all'altra, stancano subito. E la voce, croce e delizia, a tratti è ridondante, monocorde, soprattutto quando allunga le vocali alla fine della strofa.
Ad ogni modo, il risultato finale è un disco che stupisce, sia per la ventata d'aria fresca che porta in un genere spesso clone di se stesso, sia per lo spirito sbarazzino e benevolo, che si contrappone alla cattiveria tipica del metallo. Per capire cosa voglio dire, ascoltate la traccia 13: "I Only Wanna Be With You". E' la canzone che rende meglio il concetto "sbarazzino".
