Dedico la mia prima recensione a uno dei miei gruppi preferiti degli '80 e, secondo il mio modesto parere, il migliore di tutta l'ondata hard-rock/glam americana di quegli anni.
I White Lion sono uno dei primi gruppi rock che ho ascoltato e, al contrario della maggior parte degli altri, dopo infiniti ascolti non mi hanno ancora stancato per quanto riescono ad emozionarmi. Questo è il loro quarto ed ultimo album datato 1991 in cui secondo me raggiungono (almeno in alcuni pezzi) il loro apice compositivo e tecnico e che, inoltre, ha una registrazione superiore ai precedenti. Comunque molto belli anche i tre "Fight To Survive" (1984), "Pride" (1987) e "Big Game" (1989). La band è composta per 3/4 da italo-americani (Bratta, Lomenzo, D'Angelo) e dal danese Mike Trampenau.
L'album si apre con una delle migliori canzoni dei nostri che è anche un brano abbastanza atipico e particolare per la sua lunghezza e complessità. Parlo di "Lights And Thunders" che parte con un intro alquanto scuro che a me ricorda l'intro di un altro capolavoro dell'anno precedente ossia "Pornograffiti" dei mitici Extreme. Si mettono subito in risalto l'ottimo singer Mike Tramp (che lo scorso anno ha riesumato la band senza Vito Bratta per una nuova tounee che però, causa l'assenza del sublime chitarrista, non ha avuto molto successo) e il già citato grande guitar-player Vito Bratta che, in my humble opinion, è tra i migliori del tempo e che, purtroppo, possiamo ascoltare solo sui 4 album del "leone bianco" perchè pare essersi ritirato da tutto quello che concerne il mondo musicale (si diceva per un problema alla mano mai confermato). Il nostro possiede un gusto e una tecnica fuori dal comune e, di sicuro, non fa parte di tutta quell'ondata di guitar-hero tutta tecnica e senza sentimento venuta fuori dopo il successo di Van Halen… ascoltate che cosa riesce a fare con la sua Steinberger!! Solo gli assoli valgono l'acquisto del disco per quanto sono belli, sentiti e personali! A me per certi versi ricorda l'altro mio chitarrista preferito degli '80 (e altro italo-americano) ossia Criss Oliva (R.I.P.).
La seconda Traccia è una nuova, migliore, versione dell'intramontabile hit "Brokenheart" già presente sul loro primo lavoro "Fight To Survive", canzone che mi ha accompaganto lungo tutta la mia adolescenza. Non mi metto a parlare di ogni singolo brano perchè sarebbe noioso. L'album si compone di pezzi tirati come "Leave Me Alone" e "Warsong", di mid-tempo come "It's Over" e di grandi ballate come la bellissima "You Are All I Need". Non tutti i brani, però, sono all'altezza di quelli da me citati e il pezzo debole dell'album, secondo me, è soprattutto la ballata "Till Death Do Us Part" che mi ricorda il peggior Lenny Kravitz commerciale degli ultimi anni. Il disco si chiude con il brano "Farewell To You" in cui i nostri ci danno l'addio in diverse lingue del mondo tra cui anche l'italiano.
Per concludere un disco da avere per tutti gli amanti dell'hard rock e per tutti i chitarristi che così potranno rivalutare uno dei guitar-player più sottovalutati e sconosciuti della storia musicale.
