Descrivere questo album in poco spazio senza perdersi in digressioni ed elogi mi sembra improbabile, ma voglio provarci.
Dal primo album dei Within Temptation le cose sono cambiate. Negli anni il suono della band, come dovrebbe naturalmente essere, si è evoluto, in meglio o in peggio non sta a me definirlo. In questo nuovo capitolo della discografia della band, chi si aspetta voci maschili profondissime come in "The Gatekeeper" rimarrà forse deluso, mentre agli altri non resta che lanciarsi nell'ascolto di questo "The Heart Of Everything", che segna una svolta più metal rispetto alla tradizione, senza perdere il giusto contributo dato dalle atmosfere, a volte così soffuse, a volte realmente accattivanti, condite dalla forza dei testi. Vorrei anche sottolineare l'efficacia dell'accompagnamento orchestrale, che rende maestose e solenni le melodie, senza però oscurarle: davvero notevole.
L'album inizia con "The Howling", e subito risulta ottima la decisione di porre in apertura questa canzone, davvero bella. Un'atmosfera cupa, interessante il lavoro ritmico; Sharon Den Adel dà subito prova di eccellente voce e carisma interpretativo. Si prosegue con "What have you done", in cui Sharon duetta con Keith Caputo dei Life of Agony, in una canzone alla Evanescence (e questo mi fa storcere il naso, non avrei mai voluto fare tale paragone). Il tutto è discreto, non particolarmente innovativo ma tagliente. Segue "Frozen", brano piuttosto lento in apertura, che prosegue poi con potenti riff addolciti da un sottofondo orchestrale, per un risultato godibilissimo. Con "Our Solemn Hour", a mio parere la canzone migliore dell'album, ben strutturata e potente, i Within Temptation toccano un altissimo livello di espressività. Stupendo il sottofondo corale e il contrasto che crea con la voce di Sharon. Alla traccia numero cinque troviamo "The Heart of Everything", che parte con le migliori intenzioni, con un'atmosfera molto gotica che prosegue anche negli intermezzi strumentali, poi la voce di Sharon, che qui segue una linea più aggressiva, non sempre riesce a risultare appropriata, almeno in questo brano, con il quale comunque dimostra una certa versatilità vocale. "Hand of Sorrow" si apre molto lentamente, per poi continuare con un cantato fluido e trascinante. Una delle canzoni migliori, anche nel testo. "The Cross" inizia in maniera molto curiosa, con una voce che sfida una chitarra distorta su un sottofondo allucinato; il tutto crea un'atmosfera molto "metal" e al contempo misteriosa. Voce campionata per "Final Destination", in un pezzo molto duro e potente. "All I Need" è forse la canzone più incline al pop, non per questo brutta, ma forse non è la più riuscita dell'album. La voce di Sharon ne risolleva comunque le sorti.
Comincia in modo molto epico "The Truth Beneath the Rose", brano davvero eccellente, così come il testo e l'ottima chiusura affidata all'orchestra. Un contributo importantissimo all'intero album è garantito dalle oscure voci del coro, sicuramente un punto di forza. L'ennesima fatica dei nostri olandesi si chiude con "Forgiven", un bellissimo lento in cui la voce di Sharon, accompagnata da un pianoforte, si lancia in delicati vocalismi. Una canzone molto commovente, molto malinconica, che ad un ascoltatore non troppo attento potrebbe sembrare banale, ma davvero drammatica nel testo e nell'accompagnamento.
Ancora una volta i Within Temptation ci lasciano piacevolmente stupiti e ci offrono questo "The Heart of Everything", il quale rappresenterà sicuramente una fase importantissima della loro evoluzione.
