Il nome del gruppo è preso da questo film e nella musica dei Xiu Xiu, gruppo
composto da quel pazzo di Jamie Stewart, da Cory McCulloch e Yvonne Chen si
può ritrovarne tutto il dramma e la disperata rassegnazione, ma anche una certa
tragica ironia...
Credo di aver aspettato troppo a scriverne, ora non riesco piú ad essere obbiettiva,
ormai amo tutto di questo disco!
Quasi impossibile da ascoltare in cuffia, le melodie dolci e rallentate, i suoni elettronici, i rumori stridenti e la voce di Jamie Stewart... non ci sono vie di mezzo per la sua voce, il suo cantato è spesso un sussuro tremolante e proprio mentre stai alzando il volume per cercare di capire meglio le parole che si mangia ...AAAAHHHHHHH! Parte un urlo lancinante che ti fa saltare dalla sedia....
Amo perfino la sua megalomania e paranoia messe in evidenza in "Ian Curtis Wish List" (forse scritta per una fan?):"oh what will happen, will you ever bleat out: DO YOU LUV ME, JAMIE STEWART?! Jane.S I AM KIDDING, I'M JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!" ... "I will take it too far! The twenty-hundred private loops making up my AAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Ian Curtis - I can't believe I said it! - wishlist!"
È un pazzo!!! e lo sguardo nella foto sul retro della custodia la dice lunga...
Ma non fatevi spaventare dalle urla di Jamie e nemmeno dalla mia recensione, ci
vogliono nervi saldi al primo ascolto, ma vi giuro che ne vale la pena... è un
disco difficile ma bellissimo!!
COMPRATE "A Promise"!! Fosse anche solo per le bellissime "Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl" e "Apistat Commander" un crescendo esaltante e l'ossessivo ritornello... "all that you left you left for someone, all of this hurt that's wilted off, oh this relief is the oddest thing, oh my god, oh my god, oh my gooood...!"
C'è anche una nuda e disarmante cover di "Fast Car" di Tracy Chapman, solo
basso e voce.

Ci sono dischi che ti cambiano la vita. Sono pochissimi, frutto di selezione o fulmini a cielo aperto, ma quando arrivano, ti squartano come un maiale agonizzante in un ammazzatoio.
È ‘A Promise’, uno di quei dischi che o lo ami, o lo odi, è vero. Ma se lo si odia, è perché ci si rifiuta di entrare in un’emotività così alta.
