Domanda: Cosa potevano fare i Xiu Xiu dopo aver subito il furto di attrezzatura elettronica e computer poco dopo l'uscita di " A promise" (aprile 2003)? Risposta: Annullare il tour, tornare in studio e registrare un album acustico. Di più. Un bellissimo, emozionante, toccante, intenso album acustico.
"Fag Patrol" è composto da due nuovi brani, "Helsabot" e "Nieces Pieces", da 2 brani tratti da "Knife play" : "Dr Troll" e "I Broke Up", 2 da "Chapel of the Chimes": "King Earth, King Earth" e "Jennifer Lopez", 2 da "A Promise": "20,000 Deaths For Eidelyn Gonzales 20,000 Deaths for Jamie Peterson" e "Brooklyn Dodgers" più la cover di "Asleep" degli Smiths che però mi sembra un po' piatta e monotona rispetto allo spessore del resto del disco. Un disco zeppo di tensione, palpabile, ma trattenuta, che trova sfogo solo nelle potenti urla straziate di "Jennifer Lopez" in una versione che quasi supera in bellezza la "Sweet Science Version" di "Chapel Of The Chimes". Però dico subito a chi ha trovato inascoltabile "A Promise" di stare lontanissimo da "Fag Patrol" lo trovereste veramente insopportabile, non potreste reggere... e del resto non sarà difficile starne lontani, è stato prodotto in edizione superlimitata dalla Free Porcupine Society e - se ne è rimasta ancora qualche copia - potreste averlo solo ordinandolo al sito http://www.absolutelykosher.com/merchandise.html (thnx joser!) Vi arriverà dentro una bella custodia di carta grigioverde, insieme alla fattura e ad un cd omaggio con le novità musicali della Absolutely Kosher.
Acustico dicevamo....dovendo quindi fare a meno degli abituali rumori industriali che caratterizzavano la trama musicale degli album precedenti, l'unica ossessiva protagonista di questo cd rimane la voce di Jamie Stewart, che ha modo di esprimere tutto il suo calore drammatico e quasi da sola mi trascina nel disturbante mondo musicale di Jamie, creando suggestioni emotive straripanti di pathos. Jamie Stewart... il pazzo... e pensare che insegna in un asilo... Durante le registrazioni la sua bocca doveva essere veramente vicinissima al microfono perchè ne viene registrato ogni singolo respiro, ogni parola soffocata, ogni gemito strozzato...Un contatto talmente intimo con Jamie Stewart che se ascoltato nel momento sbagliato per qualcuno potrebbe diventare quasi fastidioso, morboso... Chissà come reagireste all'ascolto di "Helsabot" ad esempio, dove ad un certo punto arriva un salivoso sottovoce " Do your pants ever just fall off off off..." capace di provocarmi una scossa di pelle d'oca... ma io amo i Xiu Xiu!!! Di "Fag Patrol ne sono state incise 1000 copie... la mia è la 421.
