Energia adolescenziale virata in bianco e nero, attitudine mentale positiva, quattro graffianti accordi e la rabbia ingenua di un gruppo di ragazzini che avevano tutta la voglia di dire la loro, di dirselo fra loro. Nove pezzi, nudi e crudi, duri come sassi nelle scarpe. Pezzi che si risolvono in pochi, pochissimi minuti.
Originari del Connecticut ma newyorchesi d'adozione, gli Youth Of Today sono fra i migliori esponenti di quella seconda ondata dell'hardcore americano che va dal 1985 al 1990. Dalle ceneri degli Youth Of Today nacquero gli Shelter, tuttora in attività.
Registrato originariamente nel settembre del 1985 per la Positive Force e uscito come 7", questa robetta grezza, che rappresenta una cosa cara per i nostalgici dell'hardcore e che non ha niente da dire a tutti gli altri, contiene alcuni dei classici della band: "Take a Stand", "I Have Faith", "Can't Close My Eyes", "Youth of Today" e l'anthem "Youth Crew", piccoli brevi schianti per ragazzini inquieti. Non siamo ancora ai livelli dei successivi "Break Down the Walls" e "We're not in this Alone", ma l'energia c'è tutta, e in questo caso la schietta spontaneità che anima tutte le opere prime si fa sentire nell'acerba e sgraziata voce di Ray Cappo, nei testi tirati a suon di slogan, nelle gracchianti schitarrate di John Porcelly e nelle nervose, velocissime peripezie della sezione ritmica, il tutto tenuto insieme da una produzione semplice, pulita e tutto sommato efficace (senti la versione del 1988 rimixata da Don Fury e pubblicata in versione 12" con l'aggiunta del brano "Positive Outlook").
Ci furono molte band ideologicamente e musicalmente affini agli Youth Of Today, ma poche potevano vantare altrettanta credibilità ed energia, e ne è prova la freschezza che emana da questi solchi a più di un ventennio di distanza. Quei ragazzini ingenui sembrano essere ancora lì, a raccontarsi qualcosa, a sferragliare coi loro strumenti scordati e a vivere qualcosa che ricorda la giovinezza.
