Ha breve durata il cammino intrapreso dalle All Saints lungo la strada del successo. Si affermano durante la stagione del girl power, anch'essa destinata a concludersi piuttosto in fretta, ma sono già in frantumi qualche mese dopo l'uscita del loro secondo album, "Saints & Sinners". Eppure questo disco era stato annunciato nel febbraio 2000 da un singolo di qualità come "Pure Shores", che compariva nella colonna sonora del film "The Beach" con Leonardo DiCaprio. E che, soprattutto, era stato scritto in collaborazione con William Orbit, un paio d'anni prima distintosi nella produzione di "Ray of Light" di Madonna. Se l'R&B che ritroviamo in questo album è spruzzato di elettronica, lo si deve proprio a Orbit, che interviene qua e là come produttore e co-autore.
Dodici tracce dunque per le quattro ragazze anglo-canadesi che prendono il nome da una strada di Londra, All Saints' Road, vicina allo studio di registrazione dove Melanie Blatt e Shaznay Lewis cantavano come coriste agli inizi della carriera. L'altra metà delle All Saints è rappresentata dalle sorelle Appleton, Natalie e Nicole (quest'ultima darà un figlio a Liam Gallagher degli Oasis), ma sono le due fondatrici a scrivere quasi tutti i brani dell'album: Shaznay Lewis in particolare ne firma otto.
E l'atmosfera è quella di una festa - a giudicare dalla copertina - e parecchio gaudente, con le ragazze che non si curano di essere sboccate (kiss my ass a iosa lungo le tracce del disco) nonostante cantino tutte e quattro come angioletti in "Black Coffee", secondo singolo, e hit, tratto dall'album. Mentre in altri brani sono le singole voci a essere protagoniste, quella di Melanie Blatt in "I Feel You" (che lei, giovanissima madre, dedica alla figlia), quella di Natalie Appleton in "Dreams", soprattutto quella della Lewis nel resto dei brani.
A metà strada tra un easy listening smaliziato e conscio delle tendenze del periodo, e un rhythm and blues innervato di sonorità elettroniche, "Saints & Sinners" costituisce una testimonianza, non del tutto trascurabile, di quella particolare stagione del pop al femminile.
