"Salve, qui Tom DeLonge. Ho una nuova band, si chiama Angels And Airwaves. Ed è la più bella musica che abbia mai scritto".
Con queste parole il chitarrista/vocalyst degli ormai defunti blink-182 rompe nella prima estate del 2005 il silenzio attorno all'inspiegabile scioglimento della band nel febbraio dello stesso anno, scioglimento che non ha mancato di spezzare i cuori di milioni di adolescenti e non (ebbene sì, anche il mio).
Passa il tempo e la verità viene a galla: prima i Boxcar Racer, poi le divergenze sul futuro della band e sui gusti musicali dei tre ha fatto in modo che la decennale amicizia fra Mark, Tom e Travis andasse in malora. Aggiungeteci lo stress di una vita trascorsa più che altro in tour da anni e capirete il perchè di questa decisione.
Le dichiarazioni di Tom distillate al contagocce sul suo nuovo gruppo hanno contribuito ad accrescere l'hype (forse troppo) sul nuovo "supergruppo". Tom si era ripromesso di rivoluzionare il rock n'roll degli ultimi 20 anni, di cambiare il mondo con la "miglior band del mondo". C'è riuscito?
L'album si presenta come un concept, e traspone in uno scenario di guerra apocalittico-fantascientico la vita di Tom negli ultimi mesi, lo scioglimento dei blink, il combattimento tra la band e la sua vita in famiglia e la scintilla che lo ha risollevato dalla depressione per fare questo nuovo disco. Lo stile della band innesta sul collaudato pop-punk californiano le chitarre degli U2, i riff puliti dei Cure e tastiere che ricordano i Coldplay, oltre a tonnellate di effetti e alla voce emo del Tom tardo-blink.
Il risultato, va detto, è maestoso. Certo, la voce stridula di Tom o la si odia o la si ama, i riff non sono niente di complicato, gli strumentisti sono bravi ma non eccezionali (a parte il batterista, preciso e potente, veramente bravo); tutto ciò centra comunque l'obiettivo di coinvolgere ed emozionare e perchè no, anche a risollevarti dallo scoglionamento imperante.
"Valkyrie Missile" ricorda molto "Where The Streets Have No Name" degli U2, con il suo intro di tastiere-organo e le chitarre mute in stile Edge. La canzone si apre con un dialogo "via-radio" fra Tom e Atom Willard, quasi un biglietto da visita per la band. "Chiunque vuole pregare e sperare, chiunque vuole imparare ad amare ancora" spettacolare.
"Distraction" parla della propria autodistruzione paragonata ad una città bombardata, e del conforto ricevuto dalla persona che si ama. Intro di tastiere anche qui e chitarroni per il ritornello "la città è rasa al suolo, le bombe cadono... sarò la tua distrazione". "It Hurts" inizia con un arpeggio simil-blink, è la canzone che più mi ricorda i blink, oltre al fatto che parla proprio di un'amicizia finita male "il tuo miglior amico non è la tua ragazza"...
"Do It For Me Now" fa da apripista a "The Adventure", il primo singolo tratto dall'album, altra canzone che ricorda molto gli U2, mentre l'energetico riff iniziale sembra preso da una canzone dei Cure. Il ritmo martellante della canzone fa da sfondo alla rinascita del protagonista "voglio avere ancora lo stesso sogno dove mi risveglio e sono vivo". Potente. La solenne "The War" sembra una ripresa aerea dello sbarco in Normandia "la spiaggia è piena di soldati, ora inutili corpi" e sembra riprendere il combattimento interiore di ogni persona.
Seguono la ballad "A Little's Enough" la liberatoria "The Gift" che ricorda nella musica "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" ancora degli U2, la solare "Good Day" introdotta da un minipiano per bambini che rimanda nel ritornello a "I'm Lost Without You" dei blink. Chiude l'album "Start The Machine" carica di propositi di speranza e vagamente industrial (batteria elettronica, basso distorto, molte tastiere). Uff, è fatta.
Che dire? Sicuramente un bel disco rock, per Thomas Matthew Delonge sicuramente il suo capolavoro. Non è il disco-da-fine-del-mondo che ci si aspettava, Tom ha alzato parecchio il tiro durante i mesi d'attesa. Non è la miglior band del pianeta, ma ci sanno fare. Come album di debutto è ottimo. Fa storcere il naso un pò il naso la mega campagna pubblicitaria organizzata per questo disco, il fatto che Tom da punkettone cazzeggiante si atteggi a rockstar salvamondi à-la-Bono, ma rimane comunque un ottimo lavoro, ben prodotto dallo stesso blink, e chissà, magari una piccola pietra di paragone per i gruppi post-punk a venire...
Ma gli U2 sono MOLTO lontani.
