Mi accingo a recensire un altro mini-cd. Ma, attenzione, la parola mini qui non deve essere fuorviante, questo disco è tutto tranne che "mini". Mini CD, perché si tratta di una raccolta di 6 pezzi, con un inedito, versioni remixate più una cover, per una durata di 30 min circa, va bene. Ma quanto ai contenuti dirò subito che siamo di fronte ad uno dei capitoli più belli della storia degli Angra, pubblicato senza ombra di dubbio all'apice della loro carriera, pochi mesi dopo l'uscita di "Holy Land".
Gli Angra in senso generale sono secondo me una delle band migliori che il metal abbia mai avuto, e non tanto per le indiscusse capacità tecnico/compositive, ma soprattutto per la loro caratteristica di dare al genere un colore che non sia quello oscuro a cui siamo abituati, ma molto più solare. Questo "Freedom Call" rispecchia quello che ho appena detto: indiscusse capacità e colore in musica.
Si comincia con l'omonima title track (l'unico inedito presente) che cresce man mano fino ad arrivare ad un ottimo lavoro delle chitarre. Arrivano poi dei classici del gruppo, come "Queen Of The Night" (dal demo "Reaching Horizon") in cui echeggiano parti vocali bellissime ed un solo di chitarra fuori dai soliti schemi metal, ma molto ben fatto e di rara bellezza. Segue la stessa "Reaching Horizon" con la sua pacatezza e "Stand Away" in versione orchestrale. L'ultima track è l'hit "Deep Blue" dal precedente lavoro.
Mi lascio per ultima (ma nella tracklist è la penultima) la cover "Painkiller", che di certo non ha bisogno di presentazioni.
Beh, che dire, rispetto a quello che hanno sempre proposto gli Angra questa è sicuramente una prova per loro non indifferente (ma lo sarebbe per qualunque band...) e devo ammettere che i nostri superano a pieni voti l'esame. Gli Angra sfoggiano una tecnica impeccabile, ottimo l'assolo, quasi migliore di quello originale di Glenn Tipton, e Matos che non fa rimpiangere affatto i deliri vocali di Halford. Inutile aggiungere che anche tutto il resto della sezione ritmica si comporta (senza essere retorici) perfettamente, a cominciare dal celeberrimo intro di batteria. Se siete fan degli Angra questa cover non dovete assolutamente perdervela!
Concludo dicendo che siamo di fronte a un assaggio di ottima musica e di un ottima band. Lo consiglio a tutti, metalhead e non, soprattutto a chi ha dei pregiudizi nei confronti del genere targato "Metal".
