Rebirth... disco della rinascita o "semplice" continuazione di quanto la premiata ditta Loureiro/Bittencourt face in passato??? Secondo me un po' tutti e due. Piccola prefazione storica: dopo la dipartita di tre elementi dei primi Angra (Matos, Mariutti e Confessori che andarono a fondare gli Shaman), i due chitarristi decisero di mantenere viva la loro realtà musicale andando a recuperare dei sostituti ai tre precedenti compagni, cosa che secondo molti era impossibile, ma alla quale Kiko e Rafael risposero con la reclutazione di: Eduardo Falaschi alla voce, Felipe Andreoli al basso ed Aquiles Priester alla batteria; la sfida più grande fu dunque quella di trovare qualcuno in grado di mantenere alto in nome Angra, cosa che a mio parere riusci al 100%, dal momento che anche l'"insostituibile" Matos, fu rimpiazzato nel migliore dei modi, da un vocalist eccelso quale Edu, ma passiamo a parlare dell'album: Rebirth è un disco che raccoglie in se i migliori aspetti di Angels Cry e Holy Land, ma con una vena meno progressive e più power, presentandosi più compatto ed aggressivo rispetto ai precedenti capolavori della prima produzione dei carioca. Il concept dell'album si basa su una storia fantastica che racconta di un mondo distrutto da catastrofi naturali e guerre, nel quale coloro che si salvarono decisero di ricostruire una nuova società, esattamente come è successo per gli Angra, ed è proprio questo sentimento speranzoso che pervade l'album in tutti i suoi aspetti. Il disco si apre con "In Excelsis", intro minacciosa e trionfante che nel più perfetto stile della band ci conduce alla sparatissima "Nova Era", che sulla stessa riga di "Carry On", si presenta come speed track veramente d'effetto che ha il compito di mostrarci come questa "nuova" band si muova... bhè, il risultato è fantastico, la traccia si snoda in una struttura complessa ma non troppo, ricca di assoli, linee vocali fantastiche e vari cambi di tempo, che non guastano mai sia chiaro. Bellissima la parte strumentale che viene perfettamente eseguita dalle chitarre di Kiko e Rafael, alla quali un basso ben presente ed un tappeto di doppia cassa fanno da accompagno. Finita questa fase della canzone Edu torna a deliziarci con la sua grande voce e ci conduce così alla fine di questa 2° traccia. Si passa così a "Millennium Sun", traccia che si sviluppa nella sua prima parte su una base delicata di piano ed un cantato molto sentito e passionale, ma che al minuto 1 e 28 secondi, esplode in un bell riff di chitarra, che ci apre le porte al fine di accompagnarci all'ascolto di una splendida song in stile power/prog tanto caro alla band. Il risultato finale è veramente positivo, con un Falaschi che da il meglio di se e si dimostra allo stesso livello qualitativo di Andre Matos. Bellissimo tra l'altro il ritornello della canzone, che quasi sembra un urlo liberatorio, di rinascita, al quale si attacca uno dei migliori assoli (a mio parere) di Loureiro. Eccellente come al solito il lavoro svolto dagli altri componenti della band. Cori in latino aprono invece la bellissima "Acid Rain", la song più power di tutto l'album, che tra parti aggresive e veloci, ci mostra un singer in possesso di una voce veramente variegata, che va a prendere note altisseme ed altre più basse ed aggressive. Ottimo il lavoro in questo caso di Andreoli e Priester, che offrono una base ritmica quadrata e possente. Bellissima ancora una volta la parte strumentale che si divide tra assoli fulminanti e parti che invece si accostano maggiormente alla musica brasiliana. 5° song ed ancora grandi emozioni, con "Heroes OF Sand", sicuramente la più melodica dell'album (per quello che riguarda le power track) che senza esagerare con tempi complessi o assoli troppo complicati, scorre via nelle nostre orecchie in maniera eccelsa grazie ad una fantastica melodia ed anche a dei bellissimi cori di sottofondo. "Unholy Wars" è la traccia invece più strutturalmente studiata dell' album, la più progressive: basata principalmente su cambi di tempo, tempi dispari e varie acrobazie, la song risulta essere particolarmente piacevole in tutti i suoi aspetti, grazie proprio a questa varietà che offre al suo interno. Bellissimo il solo di basso, che "oscura" tutti gli altri elementi e che veramente ci mostra quanto questo giovane bassista sia valido (ma tutta la band lo è). Ennesimo colpo centrato risulta essere la title-track, che tra chitarre classiche ed elettriche è già diventanto un classico Angra, senza per nulla sfiguarare di fronte a canzoni quali "Carolina IV" e "Carry On". Bellissime le linee vocali di Edu che dopo una strofa particolarmente sentita e profonda, ci conduce al fantastico ritornello, che a sua volta introduce la parte più aggressiva della song, che si muove su coordinate uguali a quelle composte nella prima parte, ma presentandosi ancora più carica di pathos. "Judgement Day" è forse la traccia meno interessante del disco, quasi un riempitivo mi viene da pensare: a motivare questa mia considerazione c'è il fatto che la song vorrebbe essere prog, ma non riesce a venir mai fuori questa sua vena a causa di una particolare bruttezza a livello melodico. A seguire troviamo invece un'altra bellissima composizione, che si presenta simile e diversa ad "Evil Warning" (la ricordate??? quella bellissima opera presente in Angels Cry), simile nel suo intro e nell'assolo che ne segue, diversa invece per alcune atmosfere che crea. Una canzone non proprio originalissima ma veramente gustosa. Altra differenza risiede sicuramente nelle linee vocali, che in questo caso risultano essere più basse ed aggressive. "Vision" è il outro dell'album, bellissima ballad profonda ed eseguita da Falaschi in una maniera che molto ricorda Matos. In definitiva, quest' album è da considerare come un punto di incontro tra una Nova Era ed una Precedente, capace di soddisfare nuovi e vecchi fan dei carioca, ben prodotto e confezionato: consiglio vivamente di acquistarlo, non ve ne pentirete.
