Era il 1994, e gli Annihilator erano giunti alla pubblicazione del loro quarto album, dopo un ottimo esordio ("Alice in Hell") e altri due notevoli episodi ("Never Neverland" e "Set the world on fire").
In questo album troviamo Jeff Waters ad arrangiarsi le chitarre, basso, e le linee vocali, e il buon Randy black alle percussioni. Gli Annihilator col passare degli anni sono stati soggetti a continui cambi di line-up, ma Annihilator è sempre stata una band formata da ottimi musicisti. Il disco si presenta un lavoro molto articolato, a tratti tecnico, con un sound molto pulito, riff davvero convincenti e trascinanti, ritmi ben marcati e un ottimo lavoro del basso. Il disco si apre con "The Box", midtempata, a mio avviso non un ottima opener; segue la title-track, che dopo un ruggito (di leoni!) inizia subito il riff tagliente delle chitarre, e qui le percussioni fanno un buon lavoro; la song prosegue veloce, ma abbastanza corta (poco più di 3 min!). Un dolce arpeggio di clean guitars apre la bellissima "Hell is a War": riff pesanti, ritmi di blues e un ottimo assolo fanno di questa song uno dei capitoli più interessanti del platter. Appena un minuto di struementale (bliss) e poi la veloce "Second To None", che richiama lo stile degli Annihilator di "Alice in Hell". Annihilator è una song malata, molto catchy. Segue la volgare "21", che contiene a mio avviso uno dei più bei riff della'album. "In the Blood" è la ballad del disco, molto emozionante e belle lyrics. "Fiasco (The Slate)" ci fa subito intuire l'aria che si respira nella decima traccia, "Fiasco": proprio quest'ultima sembra proprio sia stata scritta per scherzo, ma essendo un ottima song, si inserisce bene tra le altre. La strumentale forte del disco è "Catch the Wind", davvero bella, tecnica al punto giusto, da notare il lavoro di basso. Per finire in bellezza le ultime due canzoni "Speed" e "Bad Child", molto deliziose.
Tutto sommato è davvero un ottimo lavoro di questa genuina band che risponde al nome di "Annihilator". Intanto proprio quest'estate finalmente li vedrò per la prima volta all' "Evolution Festival".
