Molti dei fan degli Annihilator sono rimasti delusi dopo l'uscita di questo "Set the World On Fire", terzo lavoro del gruppo.
Il gruppo con questo album abbandona le sonorità prettamente thrash di "Alice in Hell" e "Never Neverland", aggiungendo melodicismi mozzafiato e una manciata di ballads, che compaiono per la prima volta in un album degli Annihilator; ma molti spunti sono derivati dal precedente "Never Neverland".
Eppure l'album risulta abbastanza originale, molto curato e con le chitarre più pulite. Aaron Randall, il cantante, fa il suo buon lavoro (ho notato i suoi problemi con le "s", come si dice comunemente "lingua mozza"), rivelandosi il miglior cantante che abbiano mai avuto gli Annihilator. La prima traccia è la title-track, abbastanza lenta, ma pesante, con un riff in contrattempo molto superbo. Segue la veloce "No Zone", una corta canzone molto orecchiabile che si fa sicuramente notare tra le altre. Anche la successiva "Bats in the Belfry" è un'ottima canzone che mette su allegria, bello il ritornello ("Why don't you listen? I'm trying to help you!"). La melodia (ma non abbastanza) arriva con "Snake On the Grass", un capolavoro di canzone, inizia con un intro di chitarra acustica accompagnata dalla voce di Aaron: bella la chitarra elettrica nel ritornello, aticolata come detta lo "stile Annihilator".
Ecco la prima ballad, la struggente "Phoenix Rising", che come la maggior parte delle canzoni dell'album, ha il suo punto forte proprio nel ritornello a 2 voci, una bella canzone veramente. "Knight Jumps Queen" è la canzone più debole del disco, che non vale neanche la pena di commentare, vi consiglio magari anche di saltarla per godervi subito la 7° traccia (altra ballads del disco) che è anche la canzone più bella di tutto l'album. Poche note di una clean guitars all'inizio per poi sentire Aaron che da il vià al flusso della canzone cantando "saved away" (credo dica così), per arrivare ad una bellissima strofa ("Say goodbye and close your eyes, let’ s drift away"), ed un altrettanto bello ritornello ("Dream away don’ t wait for the night, ’ cause any old time at all sounds good to me").
"The Edge" è un bella canzone anch'essa, mi stupisce il fatto che sia stata in un paio d'ore (vedi booklet), la prossima "Don't Bother Me" rimane sempre ad alti livelli, con un riff molto "heavy" e con la doppia cassa a ripetere sempre cellule puntate (croma puntata + semicroma).
Per finire in bellezza c'è "brain Dance", prova della grande abilità compositiva di Jeff Waters, un brano quasi demenziale, ma utile per tirare su il morale, le chitarre suonano scherzose, molto bella la parte centrale (che mi fa vagamente ricordare qualche musical), piena di tecnica (non molta comunque).
Consiglio questò album a qualsiasi metallaro che abbia però la mente aperta anche alle melodie, questo album segna una scissione (che termine!) tra i fan, a 50 e 50, c'è chi continuerà ad amarli dopo avere ascoltato i loro primi due album, chi invece rimarrà profondamente deluso.
