Ebbene si!... Ero il metallaro medio che a metà degli anni novanta comprava Metal shock. La scelta che inizialmente era solo economica (Metal Hammer costava 7000 e Metal Shock solo 4000 lire!) alla fine divenne più che altro di affezione. Al mio edicolante dovevo ripetere almeno tre volte il nome della rivista prima che capisse mi aprisse la vetrinetta esterna e me la consegnasse con aria perplessa. E soprattutto mi fidavo delle recensioni di Metal Shock e compravo gli album anche a scatola chiusa. In cotal guisa presi diverse fregature, ma anche tante soddisfazioni : Arch Enemy - "Burning Bridges" ne fu lampante esempio.
Considerando la mia (all'epoca) venerazione per il metal estremo e tutti i suoi derivati, il sound di Gothebourg cadde a fagiuolo nei miei padiglioni auricolari. In Flames, Dark tranquillity, Opeth, Soilwork e decine di band del cosidetto "swedish death metal" trovarono terreno fertile nelle mia collezione di CD. Finalmente il metal, in un certo senso anche melodico, tornava su binari più Heavy, dopo le stucchevoli incursioni tra elfi, fate e spade tipiche del Power Epic Metal birraiolo.
Nel calderone di gruppi che ne scaturì, la felice e inaspettata sorpresa furono senza dubbio gli Arch Enemy di Micheal Ammott. Il chitarrista svedese, già axeman dei Carcass nei capolavori "Necroticism" 1991 e "Heartwork" 1993 insieme all'ottimo Chris Ammott (fratelllo ed ex Armaggeddon) e al cantante Johan Liiva, dà via a quella che sarà una delle band più blasonate del metal moderno.
Dopo due esaltanti album ("Black Earth" 1996, "Stigmata" 1998) arriva nel '99 "Burning bridges" e per l'occasione la line up si arricchisce del talentuoso bassista Sharlee D'angelo (King Diamond, Mercyful fate, Witchery). L'album in questione è l'anello mancante tra le due fasi della band, la prima più orientata verso i schemi classici del death svedese (con Liiva alla voce) e la seconda più melodica, semplice e meno interessante (con la biondina Angela Gossow dietro il microfono).
La sola opener "The Immortal" giustificherebbe l'acquisto dell'album, di una potenza che lascia senza fiato, con un incredibili avvicendarsi di riff e assoli tipicamente classic metal. Impossibile non citare "Silverwing" che parte con andatura Thrash per poi esplodere in linee melodiche che non ti aspetti...geniale! E così l'album prosegue snocciolando killersong mai ripetitive, ma sempre molto ispirate come "Dead Inside", "Pilgrim", "Angelclaw", fino alla conclusiva doomeggiante titletrack che sfuma in una triste melodia di pianoforte. 35 minuti di altissimo livello e di tecnica eccezionale, Ammott mostra una varietà impeccabile nel songrwriting, oltre ad una formidabile perizia dello strumento ( a mio avviso tra i migliori chitarristi di metal estremo insieme a Chuck Shuldiner, Dimebag Darrell, e Bill Steer).
Da questo album in poi inizia per gli enemies un'inesorabile discesa nell'oblio...nel nulla musicale, a partire dal trascurabile "Wages Of Sin", fino alle ultime imbarazzanti produzioni. Forse la scelta della biondina Angela Gossow come lead singer è stata l'unico modo per focalizzare attenzione su una band che si lasciava tristemente abbandonare alla deriva, oramai priva di mordente, totalmente sconfusionata e banale. Purtroppo a parte pochi gruppi che hanno saputo reinventarsi con risultati altalenanti (Amorphis, Dark Tranquillity ) il resto della scena è precipitato rovinosamente nell'immondizia musicale: gli In Flames rifanno tristemente il verso ai Korn e ai gruppi metalcore, e i Soilwork alla continua disperata ricerca del successo commerciale con scarsi risultati.
Sicuramente il death metal svedese partito gloriosamente da Entombed, Dismember e At The Gates, di cui gli Arch Enemy furono tra i maggiori esponenti, è oramai un appannato ricordo di un passato neanche troppo lontano, e capolavori come "Burning Bridges", "The Gallery", "The Jester race", "The Chainheart Machine" sono difficilmente ripetibili.
