Salve a tutti! Eccomi al debutto su DeBaser.it… che dire sono un po’ teso quindi rompo subito gli indugi e vi parlerò oggi di Wages of Sin degli Arch Enemy, un disco che, nel bene o nel male (dipende dai punti di vista), ha segnato la carriera della band dei fratelli Amott e questo per vari fattori: a) Il cambio di cantante: al posto di Johan Liiva è subentrata Angela Gossow dotata di un timbro più aggressivo ma anche più monocorde rispetto al suo predecessore. b) L’avvio verso una “linearizzazione” e una parziale eliminazione di quelle trovate geniali che avevano reso i primi 3 album della band impedibili.
Per quanto riguarda Angela Gossow, ritengo la sua prestazione più che convincente (anche se non si ripeterà nei dischi successivi) dotata di grande aggressività riesce, secondo me, a non far rimpiangere il suo predecessore. Per quanto riguarda la “linearizzazione” è vero che sono venute a mancare le trovate geniali dei primi tre album ma le canzoni hanno guadagnato in impatto e dinamismo risultando devastanti e in grado di entrarti in testa per non uscirne più.
Il disco si apre con "Enemy Within": un’intro di piano esplode in un up tempo molto coinvolgente con un buon riff portante: davvero buono come inizio. Si prosegue con "Burning Angel" e qui le quotazioni del disco salgono notevolmente: ottima canzone basata su un riff assolutamente spettacolare, una sezione ritmica coinvolgente e un’
assolo ottimo (in questo campo i fratelli Amott ci hanno abituato fin troppo bene), davvero ottimo pezzo e, a mio parere, uno degli apici dell’album.
Si arriva a "Savage Messiah": un mid-tempos maligno che riesce a trasmettere malvagità, dotato di un break centrale veramente notevole… altro apice del disco. L’album si snoda tra pezzi interessanti e altri un po’ meno fino ad arrivare ad un altro masterpiece: "Behind The Smile", ottima melodia (anche qui il senso di malvagità sprigionato è notevole) seguita dall commovente "Snow Bound": un commovente pezzo strumentale dove i fratelli Amott sfoderano tutta la loro bravura e il loro senso melodico, davvero memorabile.
Che dire di questo album? Sicuramente un buon album che, però, non mantiene la qualità elevata per tutta la sua durata e questo sicuramente farà abbassare il voto, che poteva essere più alto.
Per i fan degli Arch Enemy (e in generale del metal estremo in generale) un album da avere; agli altri consiglio un ascolto, potrebbe piacervi davvero tanto.
P.S. ottima la produzione affidata ad Andy Sneap che conferisce potenza al tutto
