Fra le infinite meteore che hanno costellato il cielo del pop, i gallesi Badfinger nei primi anni settanta hanno rappresentato la parte oscura e sfigata del music-business al cospetto di astri ben più luminosi e fortunati di loro. Nonostante ciò hanno inanellato una manciata di apprezzabili album sotto il profilo della vena compositiva e composto alcune pregevoli canzoni che sono raccolte in questa degna antologia.
Ascoltando la delicatezza e la dolce armonia dei loro brani, tutto si potrebbe supporre, tranne il crudele destino che attendeva di lì a poco il cantante e compositore Peter Ham, morto suicida nel 1975. Per la cronaca, rimanendo ai necrologi, dei quattro membri originari solo il chitarrista Joey Molland a tutt'oggi è ancora fra noi: quando si dice la sorte. Avrebbero dovuto prendere lezione da quei satanassi dei Rolling Stones, che ancora oggi saltano e cantano come indemoniati. Atre storie, altri destini.
E pensare che erano partiti bene. Avallati da un certo Sir Paul McCartney (che li accoglie a braccia aperte nella Apple), e prodotti da gente del calibro di Tony Visconti e Todd Rundgren, i Nostri si incuneano nel grande calderone pop, ben rappresentato da nomi in vista come Raspberries, Wings, Byrds, Kinks. Il pop, si sa, è principalmente una questione di singoli e i Badfinger ne sfornano una notevole quantità senza tuttavia riuscire mai a piazzare l'acuto vincente. Il brano di maggior successo (che poi non è nemmeno il loro migliore) è "Day After Day" che si ferma al numero 4 nel Regno Unito.
Ironia della sorte vuole però che la loro canzone più nota, "Whitout You" (ignorata nella versione originale), sia una superba cover portata al successo da Harry Nilsson (morto pure lui, e ti pareva!) suonata e a volte starnazzata (tanto erano di scadente qualità) da tutti i Juke-Box della penisola agli inizi dei seventies, quando quella scatola musicale era uno dei pochi mezzi di diffusione per le magiche sette note. Qualcuno di voi l'avrà ascoltata nella recente versione di Mariah Carey (purtroppo). Non dimenticherei però, "Carry On Til Tomorrow", con intarsi vocali alla Simon and Garfunkel, la struggente "Midnight Caller", e ancora "Baby Blue", "Maybe Tomorrow" e quella "No Matter What" posta in apertura che vuole essere il loro manifesto power-pop.
Non hanno rappresentato niente di sconvolgente questi Badfinger tanto è vero che oggi (e forse nemmeno allora) nessuno li ricorda più, però è curioso e interessante andare a vedere come eravamo e scoprire che molte delle ennesime next big thing che negli anni ci vengono propinate, a ben vedere hanno poi attinto a queste fonti.
Le raccapriccianti acconciature, tipiche del periodo, delle quali fanno sfoggio in copertina e ancor più all'interno del booklet stridono con la mielosità e la gentilezza della loro proposta musicale, al punto che viene spontaneo invitare l'avventizio a non farsi ingannare dalle apparenze.
