"…Back to being who I was before…", questa è la frase con cui si apre “One Plus One Is One”, quarta prova di Badly Drawn Boy.
Sembra volerlo precisare da subito, “sono tornato per essere quello che ero”. Gli credo, primo perché come lui oggi nella “perfida Albione” non c’è n'è, e secondo perché il suo ultimo album “One Plus One Is One”, che sta girando ora incessantemente nel mio stereo, gli dà perfettamente ragione.
Abbandonato alla produzione Tim Rothrock, già collaboratore di Beck e di Elliot Smith, che di Damon aveva prodotto “About A Boy” e “Have You Fed The Fish”, l’alfiere della XL Recording affida i mixer all’amico Andy Votel, già produttore del pluripremiato esordio di Damon. Il ritorno al Low-Fi, invertendo la tendenza di “Have You Fed The Fish” che proponeva canzoni più convenzionalmente Pop e l’avvicendamento in sala regia, gli consentono un clamoroso riavvicinamento all’esordiente “The Houar of The Bewilderbeast”.
È vero quattordici canzoni non sono poche, molti cadrebbero nel tranello della ripetitività, altrettanti proporrebbero due album. Non è il caso del songrwiter più obliquo d’Inghilterra, a cui il termine prolifico va assai stretto. Damon, oggi creativo ed originale come non mai, smentisce chi lo voleva già perso nel mainstream del mercato discografico, e chi lo accusava di sterili abusi sinfonici ed esagerati barocchismi strumentali, nei precedenti due.
Registrato a Manchester, “One Plus One Is One” presenta come al solito un vasto e variegato strumentario, comunque sempre ben dosato e mai fine a se stesso. Tutto giocato sulle linee guida di piano e chitarra, secondo la miglior tradizione folk, il disco presenta come unico vezzo un abuso di fiati, ricordanti a tratti i Jethro Tull. Ascoltare per credere, dopo un’apertura piano-voce alla Elton John più ispirato, la parte centrale di “Another Devil Dies” o l’incipit di “The Blossom”.
Romantico e sognatore il songwriting, azzeccato come da tempo ci ha abituato. Come non commuoversi, infatti, di fronte ai romantici testi di “This Is That New Song” dove Badly sembra saldare una promessa di 20 anni prima. Efficaci infine i cori di voci bianche nell’avvolgente “Year Of The Rat” e nella finale “Holy Grail”.
Forse un tempo sarebbe stato esagerato, ma sono convinto che oggi Damon Gough sia l’unico filologicamente accostabile a John Lennon, perdonatemi ma citando Badly “…It’s easy to defend the logic of a friend…”.

Badly Drawn Boy, per quanto mi riguarda, rientra più che mai in questo ristretto novero [di artisti che scrivono per te].
Quando ascolterete queste canzoni, vi sembrerà di ammirare un bozzetto di Michelangelo.
