A volte ritornano. Quindici anni dopo lo scioglimento, può capitare che la band-feticcio del gothic rock primi anni '80 si rimetta insieme per un tour, battezzato non per caso Resurrection Tour. Loro si chiamano Bauhaus, ne avevamo perso le tracce nel 1983, quando avevano messo la parola fine alla loro avventura comune. Ma nel 1998 si rimettono assieme e alla Hammerstein Ballroom di New York registrano il concerto documentato in "Gotham", la città di Batman, d'accordo, ma anche uno dei fantasiosi nomignoli della città di New York.
Come se il tempo non fosse passato, i primi tre brani in scaletta sono prelevati direttamente dal primo album e nello stesso ordine: "Double Dare", "In The Flat Field", "A God In An Alcove". Brani eseguiti fedelmente rispetto ai lontani originali, del resto questo gruppo non potrebbe permettersi licenze poetiche. Tutto l'arco creativo dei quattro di Northampton trova spazio in "Gotham". "The Passion of Lovers" ci riporta al secondo album, "Mask", mentre il terzo è rappresentato dai brani più malinconici e struggenti: "Hollow Hills", in cui Daniel Ash sfrega le corde della chitarra elettrica con un archetto da violino, "Silent Hedges", introdotta dal mesto arpeggio di una 12 corde, "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything" e infine "Spirit", il brano dove dichiarano l'amore per il proprio pubblico (con il refrain we love our audience ripetuto ad libitum). Quarto album, l'ultimo, rappresentato dall'immancabile "She's In Parties".
Se in questo disco ci sono un paio tra le cover che hanno reso grandi i Bauhaus, "Telegram Sam" dei T.Rex e "Ziggy Stardust" di Bowie, c'è anche l'omaggio a una band più giovane, della generazione immediatamente successiva a quella post-punk di cui i Bauhaus sono stati la punta di diamante: ed ecco Peter Murphy che intona il canto solenne di "Severance" dei Dead Can Dance, brano talmente sentito da essere qui presente in due versioni, una registrata dal vivo e una in studio.
Quindici anni prima, lo stesso Peter Murphy aveva dichiarato: "C'è un quinto membro dei Bauhaus che è una sorta di entità spirituale. Quando non è là, sul palcoscenico, ci manca in modo crudele. Quando c'è, il concerto è investito da una autentica magia. Suonare è cercare, appunto, questa magia".
Così, in "Gotham" ritroviamo qualcosa delle grandi suggestioni che questo gruppo è stato capace di suscitare.
