Come ricevere un gavettone o una torta in faccia.
Il nuovo disco dei Be Your Own Pet suona effettivamente così, come uno scherzo che può tanto divertire l'ascoltatore più giovale quanto irritare quello più permaloso.
I Be Your Own Pet non sono un gruppo serio, ma pare proprio che facciano sul serio: "Get Awkward" esce infatti in America per l'Ecstatic Peace! (label di Thurston Moore) e vanta un produttore del calibro di Steve McDonald, bassista dei leggendari Redd Kross.
"Get Awkward" è un po' meno tagliente dell'esordio del 2006, nonostante sia pervaso dallo stesso senso di freschezza e leggerezza. Ancora una volta la band di Nashville punta su brani hardcore punk fugaci, melodici e conditi di testi demenziali; d'altronde il target principale della loro musica è essenzialmente quello di divertire il pubblico. I Be Your Own Pet sono celebri per i loro live ad alto tasso energetico e quest'ultimo lavoro invero sprizza energia da tutti i pori. "Super Soaked" e "Food Fight!" sono veloci, urlate, brevi e immediate, rispecchiando così in pieno lo stile della band. La voce di Jemina Pearl è l'ingrediente che risalta il tutto e che dona personalità al gruppo. "Becky" è invece sospesa tra una strofa pop anni '60 che ricorda molto "The Loco-Motion" (noto brano di Carole King portato al successo da Little Eva nel '62) e un ritornello garage-punk irresistibile; in "Creepy Crawl" i ragazzi giocano a fare i Distillers melodici perdendo un po' di smalto.
Alla lunga, però, il disco può risultare un tantino banale e ripetitivo: quindici tracce tanto omogenee tra loro inevitabilmente stancano. Poi però giungono pezzi da far girare la testa come "Zombie Graveyard Party!", dal titolo che sembra omaggiare l'horror punk dei Misfits e che invece vuole riferirsi al film "The Return Of The Living Dead", e "The Beast Within", la migliore del lotto, che chiude l'album tra svariate urla e feedback di chitarra.
Insomma, "Get Awkward" non convince proprio appieno, ma in compenso è un disco gradevole e festaiolo, che senz'altro mette di buon umore.
Sicuramente tra qualche anno ci ricorderemo in pochi dei Be Your Own Pet, ma per ora mi compiaccio di un disco così, solare, ben suonato e senza chissà quali pretese.
Un bel passatempo dichiarato.
